In a Substack post on Tuesday, @gabbycuccia wrote that new policy making vast parts of the Pentagon off-limits to journalists was a “troubling shift.” Evidently someone disagreed. On Thursday “I was asked to turn in my Pentagon badge to my bureau chief.” cnn.com/2025/05/31/med…
A self-proclaimed “MAGA girl,” @gabbycuccia positioned herself as a proudly conservative voice among the normally nonpartisan Pentagon press corps. But she grew perturbed by Hegseth’s actions against the press...
Exclusive: One America News chief Pentagon correspondent Gabrielle Cuccia criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s crackdown on press access at the Pentagon. And then, she says, she was fired >>>
Meanwhile, Harper retired in 1927 and produced his own account of Jutland. In an attempt to counter this, the Admiralty finally published a version of his record as a command paper in 1927. Years of acrimony would have been avoided had Beatty and Co. not been so sensitive! /End
109 years ago today the Battle of Jutland was fought in the North Sea between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Sea Fleet. It is notorious that to this day many of us in the United Kingdom have re-fought the battle again and again in print. A thread: 1/
From Trump's deranged rant last night, you'd think that he appointed all three of the panel members that ruled against him and that he did so on Leonard Leo's recommendation. In fact, he appointed only one, Timothy Reif, and he did so on the recommendation of Robert Lighthizer,…
More WSJ: "The President should understand that his attacks on judicial conservatives will hurt his own agenda and legacy. His social-media post is the talk of the judicial ranks, and he is making no friends. Mr. Trump is likely to see fewer judges retire, lest they be replaced…
So who spun Donald Trump into his idiotic rant? Very likely that it was deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, trying to deflect blame from himself and still "sore that Mr. Leo didn’t provide money through his political donor network for Mr. Miller’s legal group after the 2020…
More from WSJ: "President Trump is expert at downplaying his failures, but attacking his own success is something new.... Mr. Trump is attacking the group, and especially the man in Leonard Leo, that were vital to his first-term success on judicial nominations. Mr. Leo helped Mr.…
Outstanding Wall Street Journal house editorial: Donald Trump vs. His Own Judges. I'll start with this nugget: Leonard Leo had nothing to do with Trump's nomination of the Court of International Trade judge who ruled against him on tariffs. Trump's own trade representative…
Downstream industries can absorb a 10% tariff -- maybe even a 20-25% one (the impact previously was mitigated by extensive exclusions). But probably not a 50% tariff -- at least not easily ... 5/ 5/
And thus the US steel market also essentially clears via imports from Canada, Brazil (semi-finished), Europe (more stainless, high value), Mexico and Korea ... 4/
There is a bit of reported spare capacity in the US steel industry, but the old blast furnaces didn't get turned on in 2021 when steel prices were well over $1000 a ton, so I doubt they will get turned on now ... 3/
Aluminum is a clear case -- the US relies on Canadian imports to meet demand for primary aluminum production (logical, as Canada has cheap hydro and is a secure supplier!). The 50% tariff will mostly be passed on to consumers. 2/
The Trump administration seems remarkably indifferent to the impact of steel and aluminum tariffs on downstream industries (autos, planes ... and, if there is to be a revival, ships). The steel and aluminum markets don't currently clear without significant imports 1/
Michael Kimmage (FP): Russia is losing the war in Ukraine. It has lost 838,000 troops, GDP growth is 0%, inflation is 10% and Pokrovsk offensive failed. Even Trump’s inclination to back Putin is fading — after Russia bombed past his proposed ceasefires. 1/
