I am so very sad that John has gone. I'll never forget his kindness as external examiner for my PhD. He made it feel safe, like I had something important and useful to say as a novice. Such generosity of spirit and intellect, and such inspirational writing

A tragic loss. I first worked with him when he was a Northern College and during the miners strike. He was an inspiration to those of us working in adult education and a great friend. You will be missed for your work, your friendship and for being you. RiP John
