NHSE’s winter plan is inadequate. 500k patients waited >12hrs in English EDs Jun-Sep alone. Our knackered ED teams are looking for lasting action so we have beds for our patients, not non-existent “quick wins,” job freezes, and managers playing “war games” independent.co.uk/news/health/nh…

Following the incident in Liverpool City Centre this evening, we know that many people are concerned about loved ones. Next of kin will be contacted, so please help us to manage the incident as best we can by refraining from calling our switchboard.

Everyday A&E clinicians and staff go to work knowing they are likely to be faced with severe over-crowding and not being able to provide the level of care they want to. Can you imagine the toll that takes? Dr Luke Craddock has shared what it's been like working in A&E during…
NHS short staffing is associated with at least 4,000 extra deaths annually, shown in @CUH_NHS and @UniOfSurrey @bmj_latest research. High staff turnover and reliance on agency workers are leading to severe consequences, especially in A&Es. There is an urgent need for a stable…
The number of beds to get back to 85% occupancy is about 10,000. Sounds a lot? Not really, it's 1-3 extra wards per hospital. Obvs needs to be the right sort of beds (with staff, single rooms etc) but NOT unacheivable RCEM Acute Insight Series: Crowding and its Consequences

Ambulance drop-and-go policies won’t fix anything in the long run and hide the lack of meaningful action. Hundreds of patients each week are dying in association with overcrowding in EDs. How about fixing the actual problem? @RCollEM 1/3
#ICYMI: Winter looms with many EDs already experiencing unsustainable pressure. We urge NHSE to focus on reducing the longest, most dangerous A&E waits. There were 2,214,217 attendances in EDs in England. The highest September attendance recorded. Read: tinyurl.com/rcemNews1110

One of the few things we know for certain about the Southport incident is that if you are really concerned about it, it would be a very good idea to show that concern by giving blood.

This will, inevitably, lead to long and harmful stays in emergency departments. This, in turn, means queues of ambulances waiting outside hospitals. Few other comparable countries tolerate this. #resuscitateemergencycare bbc.co.uk/news/health-67…

NHS struggling to open extra winter beds and fill staffing gaps
Hospitals in England warn a lack of funds means they must scale back on extra beds and recruitment.
Of course the ultimate root cause of this is a reduction in number of beds, a reduction in social care provision, and a lack of availability of carers and care homes. You know who to thank for that. However we cannot go on leaving the highest risk patients for ED to manage.

In a child with fever and a rash, apply the glass test. If the rash is still visible with pressure, this is called a non-blanching rash which can be a sign of meningitis (or meningococcal sepsis) ⚠️
