This week in absolutely wild research: researchers injected algae into blood vessels of dead tadpoles, shined a light on them, and found optical nerves began to fire again. How long or how effective this could be in a full system is still undetermined. buff.ly/2qJitYN

You may know of Streptococcus #bacteria, of strep throat fame, but new research suggests it may be related to knee pain. It found a correlation between high levels of these bacteria and inflammation, which could mean another treatment option for arthritis. buff.ly/2pyeUnX

Every year we have a friendly contest where our #microbiology students build a bug to solve an issue. The prize besides a good grade? A @GIANTmicrobes plushie! Morgan and Jordan, part of this year's winning team, show off the "zombie" virus and adrenaline.

Thinking about #gradschool? #CSU MS-B alumni Jessie Filer has this advice: “I changed what I wanted to do several times throughout graduate school but having a general idea can help you tailor your professional development to your particular interests.” buff.ly/2D1csJW

Mucus might seem gross—especially when you’re under the weather—but it plays a key role in your immune system. Research found that mucus doesn’t just trap #bacteria; it disrupts their attempts to communicate with one another and form biofilms. buff.ly/2O2a5wu

We love seeing where our graduates go after they get their #microbiology degree! Meet one of our 2015 MS-B #alumni, Jessie Filer, who went on to be a medical writer! buff.ly/2D1csJW

Fun fact about #dengue: in mosquitos, the #virus has a smooth protein coat but in humans it is bumpy. This allows the virus to evade our immune systems. But researchers suggest lab strains of dengue might be a poor model to actually assess these changes. buff.ly/31E6hGe

Responsible use of #antibiotics for livestock is crucial to public health and safety. The 41% rise in macrolide use during 2016-17 likely helped make the 2018-19 outbreak of multi-drug resistant Salmonella more severe. #AntibioticResistance buff.ly/2qtNyiX

Happy Friday! Take a break with a little #science #ASMR. This is one of our students starting to make agar, a seaweed-based gelatin used in the lab to grow #bacteria, among other things.

The resident bacteriophages of your gut are still largely a mystery, although there's hopes to change that. Researches studied the virome of 10 adults over a year to start getting a baseline for the unknown phages that inhabit our guts. #microbiome #virus buff.ly/36DuBLk

What would it mean for the economy if we were able to pin down a quick cure for #Alzheimers? An effective cure would have massive impacts on healthcare employees (and loss of ~654k jobs) and nursing home revenue (to the tune of $51 billion). #medicine buff.ly/2nbB0eS

New assay alert: If you're interested in prion diseases, but are frustrated by the lack of methods to actually evaluate them, we are 100% with you. That's why this paper detailing a bacteria-based assay that detects prion formation is pretty exciting. buff.ly/2pwmBe2

Coral are stressed enough as it is, and this newly identified #bacteria isn't helping. C. aquarickettsia is a parasitic bacteria that drains energy from coral, making them easier targets for other pathogens and reef-destroying environmental conditions. buff.ly/2MRy8MY

Koalas are at higher risk for chlamydia due to a gammaretrovirus. Recent research into this #virus found there may be adaptive immune functions specific to certain genetic sequences. buff.ly/2IMBjnQ
