I felt differently 10 years ago, but more and more I am starting to believe that Algebra 2 should only be a class required of kids that are planning to go to college. If kids are not college-bound, I think a financial math class would be way more valuable. #mtbos #iteachmath

The performing arts, sociology, and anthropology are not “rip-off” or “scam” degrees. For one thing, they shape our understanding of mathematical practices and the learning and doing of mathematics.

Science is not a contest to be won. It’s a collective pursuit of truth that evolves with evidence - not a debate settled by opinion or the loudest voice.

Unlike the days of Plato and Aristotle, lectures today should be places for discourse, civil debate, engagement with divergent thought, and attempt of unusual and difficult mathematics problems for which solutions may not emerge by the end of the lecture.

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematician at a time when there was no Internet or AI. He learned from "A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure Mathematics" books.google.ca/books?id=JLmCA… So why go to university to study mathematics? There is more to lectures than you think.

50% Off MATS! For more info: atm.org.uk/News/50-off-ma… MATs are extensively used from infant to post-16. They're ideal for investigating shape and space, tessellations, reflection, rotation angle, tiling patterns, and for experimental approaches to the construction of polyhedra.

What should university math learning or teaching look like? At freshmen orientation talks at a different York University across the pond, I always used this image to metaphorically describe how to teach and support university math. Exciting times. Join the MathEdLab @ TMU.

Results of the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023 will be published on Dec 4th, 2024. The raw data for each educational jurisdiction will be publicly available in Feb 2025 for researchers to use in secondary analysis to inform policy - e.g. in Canada (Ontario).

A men's washroom at the Isaac Newton Institute of Mathematical Sciences. We do not only engage with or learn Mathematics in the lecture hall but wherever ideas comes to mind. In the interest of EDI, I wondered if they had the board in the other place.
