I’m not sure most students today have the stamina to persist with questions like these.
Ontario ranks high in math thanks to educators making learning not just about the fundamentals, but also rich problems that get students to think & use tools, because PISA questions aren't "basic." Here's a short 🧵 of some doozies. Let's start with a SPREADSHEET?!?! 🤯

Why do schools expect Ts to dress professionally when they make blue-collar wages?
The pacing of curriculum is very personal and student-centered. Is the purpose so math PLCs have something to talk about? Bc Ts can have rich discussions without it.
I think most adults would grant that everyone learns at their own pace, in their own way, right? Given that, though, let me tell you about the education term "pacing guide"...

The man who spent < 5 years teaching in the classroom is SHOULD-ING on teachers again. Get off your high horse and get back teaching again FT in the classroom. Not only will this greatly complement your research, but it will also remind you that a day only has 24 hours.
State accountability is in charge of assessment.
I agree that there is math and there’s school math, however math education isn’t the problem. Assessment became the problem.
Math education ruined mathematics by making it about memorizing useless facts/formulas, applying rarely explained algorithms, and testing ad nauseam. It doesn't even "prepare" you for the outside world. It's dated, obsolete, and thoroughly inconsequential.

If we aren't teaching mathematics for its inherent beauty, history, people, events, milestones, current problems/dilemmas, and general jaw-dropping awe and wonder, then what are we teaching it for? Never mind. @HumResPro
