Teacher & Adjunct. Deeply devoted to improving mathematics education for all. Thoughts are my own. Don’t make it about more.

If you teach it really well, can’t you consider yourself great at math? What’s the bar in our society to be considered great at math?

I’m not sure most students today have the stamina to persist with questions like these.

Ontario ranks high in math thanks to educators making learning not just about the fundamentals, but also rich problems that get students to think & use tools, because PISA questions aren't "basic." Here's a short 🧵 of some doozies. Let's start with a SPREADSHEET?!?! 🤯

Stop dresscoding MS girls. The girls are establishing their identity. Nothing sexual about it. Go to the mall and see what they have available.

Only in math class is this question pondered.

Can you express this as an operation between the two given fractions? [How easy did you find it?]

I have another X account. Please follow me @NDE_Math

Why do schools expect Ts to dress professionally when they make blue-collar wages?

The pacing of curriculum is very personal and student-centered. Is the purpose so math PLCs have something to talk about? Bc Ts can have rich discussions without it.

I think most adults would grant that everyone learns at their own pace, in their own way, right? Given that, though, let me tell you about the education term "pacing guide"...

You are welcome to be yourselves in my Papillion neighborhood. The judgy-judgers can live elsewhere.

This letter was left by neighbors so brave they refused to sign their names. This happened in Papillion, Nebraska, because a couple had the "audacity" to fly a Pride flag. #nohate

I’ve spent the past 3 years back in the MS classroom (last time was 2004) and, wow, there’s too much on teachers’ plates. Accountability has changed the landscape. #AssessLess

The man who spent < 5 years teaching in the classroom is SHOULD-ING on teachers again. Get off your high horse and get back teaching again FT in the classroom. Not only will this greatly complement your research, but it will also remind you that a day only has 24 hours.

State accountability is in charge of assessment.

Education is in charge of assessment.

I agree that there is math and there’s school math, however math education isn’t the problem. Assessment became the problem.

Math education ruined mathematics by making it about memorizing useless facts/formulas, applying rarely explained algorithms, and testing ad nauseam. It doesn't even "prepare" you for the outside world. It's dated, obsolete, and thoroughly inconsequential.

The beauty of math vs school math. Why are they different? #TooSpecificGradeLevelStandards

If we aren't teaching mathematics for its inherent beauty, history, people, events, milestones, current problems/dilemmas, and general jaw-dropping awe and wonder, then what are we teaching it for? Never mind. @HumResPro

This is going to be a fun day!!!

Thank you @sloanhelpgroup for all you’ve done to correct my student loans!!!! Balance is now $0!!!!!

Maybe teachers would return to the field if we had less accountability?

Homeschool parents testifying in favor of SB 128, says homeschool parents are responsible and state has given them great freedoms, there is no need for accountability in the bill #ksleg #ksed

Congratulations! Be sure to join the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics- best group ever.

Looking forward to my new role starting this summer. State Math Coordinator for Nebraska Dept of Education. New Twitter handle coming soon. Blessed to experience classroom teacher life the past three years. I see you, I hear you, math teachers!

Oh my! Now this is going to challenge some of my students.

Eighth grade math teachers! I've made @openmiddle Depth of Knowledge matrices to show how a single problem can replace an entire worksheet in eighth grade math. Download it now here: robertkaplinsky.com/depth-of-knowl… #MTBoS
