The 1998 Minnesota Gubernatorial Election brought a political outsider, Jessie Ventura, to office. Ventura did best in the twin cities, only finishing third in the City of Duluth. The east end region (Congdon, and Hunters Park neighborhoods) gave their biggest support to the GOP.
1978 saw a conservative revolt, and in MN would become the infamous "Minnesota Massacre". An early warning sign was when DFL-endorsed candidate Don Fraser lost the primary to replace the late Hubert Humphrey to Bob Short, owner of the Minneapolis Lakers and Twins. 🧵
In 1996, 24yr old Marty Seifert, a then recent SMSU grad and high school teacher from Marshall, MN, won an open seat in the MN House of Representatives, retaining a Republican seat.
In 2010, Mark Dayton won the Minnesota governor's race by ~8K votes or 0.4%, preventing a GOP takeover of state government In 2022, Julie Blaha won the race for MN Auditor by ~8K votes or 0.4%, in a similarly close race (but low profile) Similar margins, but very diff coalitions.

Never before seen! The 1920 Presidential election in Duluth and the Iron Range. Harding won thanks to strong results from middle/upper class voters and mining towns. Cox did better in working class and railroad towns. Debs did best in logging towns.

On Tuesday, Saint Paul voters approved a ballot question to increase the sales tax by a 60-40 margin. The proposal to increase the tax by 1% is to help fund infrastructure like the city's poor roads. It did best in the 4th Ward and worst in the 6th and 7th, barely winning.
St. Paul Minnesota had city council elections last night, and in the hotly contested 3rd Ward, DFL-endorsed Saura Jost nearly swept the race, almost winning outright on the 1st round. The race was fought on housing, infrastructure, and the Summit Ave project.

Map of the 1918 Minneapolis Mayoral Election. Incumbent Socialist Thomas Van Lear lost to J. Edward Meyers ran under a "Loyalist" label which was all but Republican in name. Van Lear had a moderate term but lost thanks to the war and repressive atmosphere by under 2000 votes.
