When one of my ears was very close to a helium balloon 🎈, I was surprised by how well the sound of my voice was canceled out from that side. A balloon with air doesn't do the trick. Any other object I tried didn't have the same effect as well. Why? #Physics #curious
When we take a long, slow walk in the woods, do we tell people that we got to the end and finished it? No. We tell them about the hours we spent observing the beauty of nature with all our senses, paying attention to the tiniest details of wonder. Math is our abstract nature.

New official collaboration with @mathleague means I will be attempting some new #math problems this weekend. I don't look at the problems beforehand in these Live Solves, in order to talk through how to think about unfamiliar challenges. #iteachmath #mathchat

Here's a beautiful video on Lockhart's famous Lament by @TobyHendy: youtu.be/Ws6qmXDJgwU She asks a fascinating question: that was written almost 20 years ago; has anything changed? Perhaps that's why it's just a "lament" and not a "blueprint for how to make things better"?.
Five rectangles. The tilted black rectangle has area 16. What's the shaded area? Special thanks again to math teacher Catriona Agg for creating this puzzle for us! Find her fun geometric puzzles at @Cshearer41 You can also view our past puzzles at aops.com/keeplearning
Trying to get my mind off of all of the troubling news, I decided to braid a paper strip with two slits—an old trick I'd never done before.
I have a long single blade that only makes straight cuts in paper. I would like to cut a 10x10 sheet of paper into one-hundred 1x1 squares. What is the least number of cuts I need to accomplish this task if a) I am willing to fold paper? b) I am not willing to fold paper?
A geeky number fact that’s a reminder we can turn things around in 2021... 2021 reversed ↩️ is 1202 2021² reversed ↩️ 1202² #HappyNewYear ❤️

A wordless puzzle today. (Well, two puzzles, really. The first is: what is the puzzle? And the second is: What are your responses to it?]
