Frederick (and all of us) is super excited to publish his first research paper on restoration trials of #Zostera #capensis in South Africa. An important contribution to help us in our efforts to better understand #seagrass #restoration in #SouthAfrica. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
@ProjectSeaStore works on basic ecology, physiology, genomics of #seagrass inc #eDNA, #bluecarbon, #microbiomes. Here a video of #fieldwork fun in #SouthAfrica mangroves and seagrass meadows. Thank you Aidan Bossert! Full version: bitly.ws/BPNB

And seahorses do occur in seagrass. Here is a Knysna seahorse from South Africa that was inadvertently sampled during some seagrass monitoring... happily went back into the water. Thank you @KatieMWatson_ for the video.
Frederick, Bianca and Katie were in Knysna to collect seagrass and sediment samples for their transcriptome and microplastic studies for @ProjectSeaStore . Great to see some healthy looking seagrass beds and happy students!
Super excited about our new paper on #herbicide impact on #seagrass in #SouthAfrica. Even low doses of #glyphosate affect seagrass fitness. With @ShallowWaterRes & funded by @NRF_News @thePeerJ thank you waiving OA fees peerj.com/articles/14295/
In preparation to have the genome of #Zostera #capensis sequenced @KatieMWatson_ has been doing sterling work extracting DNA. Easier said than done, so well done Katie for your perseverance with this!
Extremely grateful to @CenGenZA and @diplomics_sa to be able to learn from their team - @ShannonDerman is a lab wiz! Extracting high molecular weight DNA from plants is a journey… @ProjectSeaStore
Our NEW PAPER, led by @bio_za is out in Marine Genomics - #transcriptome of the #seagrass #Zostera capensis under thermal stress. sciencedirect.com/science/articl… @NRF_News thank you for funding this research!
Session: 2022 vision, strategies for adaptive management. Katie Watson shares her research on 1st #seagrass #restoration in South Africa at Langebaan Lagoon. Transplant success after 4 months, shoots are the most promising option, but with challenges for larger scale #SAMSS2022
And lots of representation for @ProjectSeaStore!
And it's a wrap... three days of solid marine science at #samss2022. So proud of my lab for their involvement, talks, posters and of course the gala dinner dancing and happy of our first in-person conference since 2019! Thank you to the organisers for a super conference.

Seagrass meadows: getting to know these unsung heroes of southern Africa’s oceans
Much of the world’s seagrass is highly threatened through human actions such as coastal degradation, as well as impacts of climate change.
Katie - those transplants are looking GREAT! @ProjectSeaStore
Getting drenched in the field checking up on my #seagrass #restoration project, but then…🌈 @ProjectSeaStore @ISeagrass #generationrestoration #inmyelement #researchinafrica #teamseagrass
Every year during #YouthMonth, we feature profiles of young researchers who have an affiliation with the NRF. If you are interested in participating, please follow this link to our website to download our questionnaire for a possible feature: bit.ly/3wosOsq
Fabulous initiative! I hope you get lots of tweets - will definitely encourage my students and collaborators to take part....
Wonderful! We just launched our #ResearcherInAfrica campaign a few seconds ago, and it looks like Aidan is indeed "in his element". Please feel free to participate in our campaign! #InMyElement
Honours student, Aidan Bossert sharing some of his fieldwork on the Berg River in #SouthAfrica collecting samples to quantify #blue #carbon in #seagrass meadows. Funded through @SasolSA @NRF_News and hoping to obtain better estimates and sources of blue carbon in South Africa.
And they are off! #scienceatmidnight sampling #eDNA is a South African #kelpforest. Featuring @goetzneef @Jannes_L and yes, it truly was midnight!
What do scientists do when there is #loadshedding in #SouthAfrica? They continue with their work of course!Honours student Emma Rossouw processing the last of the #eDNA samples collected at midnight. #scienceatmidnight
Getting ready to sample #eDNA at night, the first of three night dives. @goetzneef and @Jannes_L doing the honours. Thanks guys!!!
