Furthest corners of the world are touched by war- sign outside Brisbane, from an Australian heading to fight in north Africa:

Soviet Colonel Polosukhin is the last visitor to Borodino Museum, being closed as staff evacuate. He signs visitor's book, writing under “reason for visit”: "I am here to defend the battlefield."
Red Army is now fortifying village of Borodino, on road to Moscow- site of the climactic battle during Napoleon's invasion of Russia, 129 years ago in 1812.

More Soviet military crises- the German charge through Ukraine has reached the Sea of Azov, severing Crimea from Soviet territory- 100,000s of Red Army troops stranded in peninsula.
The Soviet government has announced evacuation of all Moscow's women & children who are not actively involved in the war effort, as German forces press in towards the city.
Moscow facing severe food shortages- 600,000 volunteers digging fortifications around city are being fed only boiling water with a little flour & salt.

American cryptographers have cracked "Purple", Japan's top-secret diplomatic code- but US State Department can't understand why Tokyo wants to know locations of US Navy warships in Pearl Harbor.
US Army Intelligence has decoded a secret Japanese diplomatic cable- finding orders to Japan's consul in Honolulu to spy on the US Naval base of Pearl Harbor.
New York Times reveals UK is training elite units of "Commandos" to invade Europe: "Supersoldiers trained in stealth, ju-jitsu & dogged resistance."
Battle for Changsha has been brutal & lawless- Japanese forces have used poison gas & tried to sneak into city gates disguised as Chinese peasants- then set huge fires.

Major Japanese defeat in China: Nationalist Chinese army has forced invaders back from key city of Changsha, killing over 13,000 Imperial Japanese Army soldiers in a month-long battle.

In besieged Leningrad, civilians congregate outside Kazan Cathedral, browsing Communist propaganda placards displayed on the pillars.

German General Blumentritt: "In striking contrast to the French or British, the Russians do not surrender- even when encircled, they stand & fight."
President Roosevelt writes to "Dear Mr. Stalin": "I can't tell you how thrilled all of us are because of the gallant defense of the Soviet armies", promises "every possible material assistance."

Private radio ownership has been banned in Norway, to prevent civilians from listening to "British propaganda"- Nazi occupiers have confiscated 300,000+ sets, at threat of imprisonment:

The Soviet government has ordered an end to anti-religious campaigns, suspended propaganda accusing priests of "primitive superstition" & "misleading the people"- USSR needs boost in morale from any source.
