Together with Holex, we’ve launched a new alliance of researchers and experts to explore what works in adult basic skills learning. The Skills for Life Alliance aims to help drive adult literacy, numeracy and digital skills up the agenda in England.
📉 Despite high need, Adult Education Budget funding has been halved from 2011/12 (£2.8bn) to 2019/20 (£1.5bn), a 52% fall in real terms.
🌏 England fares better than the OECD average in relation to literacy (15th out of 31), and worse in numeracy (19th). More than 40% of unemployed adults in England have low basic skills.
Benefits of basic skills learning include: ✍️ Increased chance of employment, access to better quality work, and higher job satisfaction, pay and security 🎭 Improved self-esteem and wellbeing 💼 Meeting the economic and employment needs of the country
🚨 🧵 Our new report highlights a decline in participation in adult basic skills learning. It explores the benefits of basic skills, identifies the gaps in learning, and highlights what works. We’ve summarised some of our key points ⬇️

We're delighted with the crucial support @Caf Resilience grant provided in enabling us to deliver online services to improve the essential skills of our migrant and refugee participants. Thank you.
With the help of a CAF Resilience grant, @RipeLearning could move its language and digital skills courses for refugees and migrants online. The online lessons also helped to reduce loneliness and isolation among learners. #CommunitiesCan @DCMS @C19SupportFund
