Happy Pi day from @CCNY_Science! Favorites this year were the key lime pie and the Milk Bar pie. Thanks to Chris Li for setting up such a fun event. I think they're still going if you want some pie.
Here's what today's Close Approach looks like: 🟡In yellow, our numerous geostationary satellites 🔴In red, the path of Asteroid 2023 BU 🌎Earth in the middle, with LEO satellites also shown. [Simulated with @OpenSpaceProj / Data from @NASAJPL Horizons] #asteroid #datavis
It is Perihelion today - when the Earth is the closest to the sun during an orbit. But, since our orbit is oh-so circular (e = 0.0167) it can be hard to notice. Here's a made up Earth orbit on the right with an eccentricity e = 0.35 in sync with our real one, on the left.
Thanks @nchembio for highlighting our recent work on elastin condensates! nature.com/articles/s4158… @alfredovidal_94 @RonaldKoder
Hell yeah: nytimes.com/2022/10/25/opi… People often look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them the subway is my favorite part of NYC... but c'mon: it's a whole train network, under the ground (!), that takes you anywhere in the city you wanna go, 24/7, for less than a cup of coffee!
Anne-Frances Miller from @ukychem came to @CCNY_Science on Monday to talk to our lab about electron bifurcation in flavin enzymes. Really cool stuff that's going to be important moving forward in enzyme design for renewable energy.
What a great time at the first in-person Gibbs conference since 2019. Super interesting biophysics in a beautiful setting. (I especially enjoyed the campfire s’mores.) Thanks to @LuciusLab, James Horn and all the other organizers!
Alexy Silakov from @psu_chemistry just gave a great talk here on oxygen-insensitive hydrogenases. I think these are a great target for protein design!

Stories like these are so valuable. There will always be a guy who says “Women just don’t want to go into those careers. Maybe people have different preferences?”, but when you see the reality, it’s instantly clear how far from a free choice/preference the decision actually is.

In addition to *fold, there are lots of structure➡️sequence models out there for "inverse folding". @ginaelnesr and I tried to collect them here: github.com/duerrsimon/fol… Let us know if we missed any!
The last days of a very productive summer are passing quickly. I feel lucky to have such a smart and hard-working group!
