6 levels of OLTP database query latency: Nice: < 1ms Acceptable: 1-3ms Probably fine: 3-9ms Slow: 10-20ms Concerningly slow: 20-100ms Fix it now: 100ms+

Do you like databases? Do you want to hear two database professors rant about them? Do you need one of those professors to have a Turing Award for databases? If yes, then join Mike Stonebraker and I next Wed Dec 10 @ 1:00pm EST for database hot takes: dbos.dev/webcast-2025-i…

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he’d have chosen Ireland and that he was very close! 🤯 Rooney spoke with Carsley + McCarthy and he was called into the U21s Turning down the 21s, he admitted he likely would have accepted a Senior Call-Up! 👀

Microsoft Azure has over 40 data centers globally. Here, I visualize (most of) them on the globe along with inter-data-center latency.

Another great post + tool from Ben. Fun to see visualized and good breakdown of the tradeoffs of different sharding strategies 💯👏

I've put together an interactive article on database sharding. Learn more about the database scaling pattern used by large orgs to handle million+ QPS workloads. I hope you learn, enjoy, and have some fun along the way.

really looking forward to this @TG4TV expose of the Irish concrete disaster, fair play to them for going over to @Empa_CH to speak with Dr Andreas Leemann for the program to learn about what is causing family homes in Donegal to fall apart. Do tune in Wednesday 9.30pm💪

How fast can servers talk to each other within a data center? Here I'm visualizing both the inter and intra availability zone latencies within Amazon's us-east-2 data center. Communicating between servers within an AZ is much faster! Check it out at benjdd.com/az

We're releasing a new tool for comparing Postgres data types for certain common scenarios! There are tons of types and many of them have overlapping responsibilities. For example, there's a money type... but you shouldn't use it. You can store MD5s as UUIDs, and so on.
