I did something that I’ve done many times: help ask questions at a family member’s clinic visit. When my patients do this, I love making sure everyone is on the same page. But in this visit, the doctor was condescending and rude towards me. Come on medicine, we have to do better.

Lost a patient in the CICU tonight; she had a massive pulmonary embolism. Code Blue & resuscitation attempts lasted over 2 hours. She had a history of DVT and was supposed to be on anti-coagulation but hadn’t received her meds “for months” because of insurance authorization.
Patient earlier today told me how insurance denied their overnight hospital stay after BRAIN SURGERY. Hello???????
One of the most important ICU communication skills you can learn… Knowing when to drop it. To stop asking about code status, stop expressing your frustration that a family “doesn’t get it”, stop trying to get a family to “understand” the situation. Knowing when is key.
