Any .zip file that I download that's under 20 MB should automatically be unzipped, and its unzipped folder opened in File Explorer. I should find a way to make this happen.

It's not only a question of time taken, but when you use a mouse you have to account for the analogue nature of moving a mouse cursor in 2 dimensions. Whereas with a keyboard shortcut it's binary (either pressed or not pressed). There is a small cognitive load to using the mouse.
A mouse needs conscious steering, while keyboards let you offload effort to muscle memory and save cognitive load. I doubt Apple studied the big picture question of the overall time to complete a mentally challenging project.

Notepad is (or was) essentially just an EDIT control. It had printing support and a menu bar, but 95% of what you use is just the standard edit control...
huml.io by Kailash Nadh is a strict markup language that doesn't allow for a lot of flexibility- which is fantastic. I have often felt that there is too much ambiguity in such languages, and for me HUML is reassuring. Only one way to do things means less errors.
