I want to share the Bone Marrow Transplant journey between myself and my sister online. But I’ve spent yesterday holding back tears; stealing moments between appointments to cry; being angry & exhausted and crying all day today. It’s a lot. Sickle Cell isn’t an afterthought.
When I registered to become a bone marrow donor 12 years ago, it was in anticipation for this moment; when my sister would need a donor for a Bone Marrow Transplant to treat her Sickle Cell Anemia. Today’s the first step of our BMT surgery but it’ll be a long road to recovery.

My little sister had her last blood exchange today after 6 years of cyclically going to the hospital every 4-5 weeks for blood exchanges to treat sickle cell. She will be having bi-weekly blood transfusions instead now in preparation for our bone marrow transplant to CURE her!🥹

Tiktok star Bus Aunty has joined an urgent appeal for blood donations as vital stocks from Black heritage donors run “particularly low.” In London there are over 3,000 eligible Ro donors needed to help sickle cell patients who haven’t made an appointment in the past year.

Sickle cell campaigner Simply Sayo who lost 2 of her sisters to the disease has also teamed up with Bus Aunty and the Deputy Mayor of London Dr Debbie Weekes-Bernard in backing the campaign which will see London’s red buses wrapped in a message calling for blood donors.
