Very cool research for a very cool question...

One of my favorite "research" videos of all time! Not an easy platform to work with, but the "pneufish" system is so informative about the dynamics of aquatic propulsion.

How does the body move during fish swimming? Tracking surface patterns using image cross-correlation gives velocity vectors directly, seen here on the head of a swimming bluegill. Very useful for directly quantifying velocity of different body regions! #locomotion #fishsci

Comparative Biomechanics just lost one of its founders, Stephen A. Wainwright. His humanity, generosity, and creativity lit a thousand mind-fires that are ablaze across wide swaths of biology, engineering, and art. With respect and gratitude.

Check out this beautiful new paper on squamate brain evolution! Incredible micro-CT render quality, and fascinating insights into the neurobiology of locomotion after limb loss. nature.com/articles/s4146…

This is a very cool movie of duck feet.
