In Judaism, if you say a prayer over something, then fail to do the requisite action that follows, like blessing bread and not eating it, it’s a bracha levatla - which is a sinful act. If you pray for victims of gun violence but do nothing, it is a sinful act.
My heart is breaking for the 15 souls in Texas and their grieving families. It also breaks for the millions of American school children and educators who continue to endure “active shooter drills” on a regular basis. This is madness.

In our orthodox shul, women recite the prayers for the US and Israeli governments and militaries. Today I was honored to recite the prayer for the US military for the congregation. And I cried.

Insurance companies in NJ will only cover a child’s hearing aid up until the age of 15. My son’s hearing is not a luxury and will not become one suddenly when he turns 15. This is insanity.

The hallmark of curiosity is a thirst for knowledge that has no obvious utility. Being a lifelong learner is taking joy in exploration regardless of whether the discovery has immediate relevance. The goal is to understand for the sake of understanding.
