hughclarke.substack.com/p/part-1-foreh… Where are the new GOAT-ing forehands?

Sinner team confirming they tweaked the serve technique AFTER US Open. Serving well here, albeit at altitude. hughclarke.substack.com/p/sinner-vs-ti… Also like the short slice reply to the Alcaraz slice early on here. These two adapt at warp speed compared to the rest of the tour.

Novak is a GOAT defender, but even Bergz will tell you these were some horrendous overheads.

Witnessing greatness up close. Unseen footage of @DjokerNole's mindblowing defence in Shanghai!

Dan Evans played squash I believe? (Ditto Fed?) These other racquet sports compliment tennis skills. Both those guys are wizards at anything continental in the forecourt

Incredible athletes are incredible in multiple sports. Even from a young age.

One thing that throws this off is who you hit with. A heavy topspin hitter will make a court feel slower than a flat hitter. Daniil makes a court feel faster than Casper

Always favor player testimony over data. Because it doesn’t matter one bit what the data says; the players have to play on it. I find their varying takes on a same court fascinating and revealing because it’s a window into what they like and what they feel they have to fight.

Is Patrick McEnroe watching the same match I'm watching? He was bemoaning Carlos using the slice backhand.

Sinner starving Carlos of forehands now and making it a match of topspin backhands. Sinner will win that.

crush-and-rush on 2nd return FH drop shots flighted forehands slice backhand crosscourt into Sinner BH big second-serves into body This version of Alcaraz is unplayable, and Sinner definitely not on yet

opening five games and Alcaraz has walked the tightrope between power, variation, and consistency perfectly.

Sinner certainly off a bit, but when Shapo brings this level of steadiness to his game he's a real treat to watch. Power on tap off both sides

Mensik now 1-6 in fifth sets at slams (def. #193 in the second round of USO 24).

Quickly put together a basic database for all available court speed (CPI) numbers from 2012-2025 that will continue to auto-update. You can hover over each number to see the source, see ace rates, filter by surface/tournament, see all winners and ball types (link in next post)

Last year, Toronto/Montreal field was hammered by the Olympic scheduling. Can’t point to that this year, but you can point to the expansion to 10 days along with Cincinnati. Word from players is consistently negative on that change- more taxing. Canada was already a squeeze.

Keeping this in mind for the North American hardcourt swing, should we get a Sincaraz match on something a little bouncier like Cincy, USO.

watching a replay now and man the sinner line backhand was so pivotal today.

Sitting down at 4-3, you just know Sinner will have to start battling some mental demons now. You have to.
