Both secularism and devout faith are growing. What's going away is the mushy middle of everyday religiosity.
If we feel more righteous as we read the Bible, we are misreading it; we are missing its central message. We are reading and using the Bible rightly only when it humbles us, critiques us, and encourages us with God's love and grace despite our flaws.
There’s something deeply incongruous about the state putting to death a person for whose salvation Christ died. Taking a person’s life must then be compatible with Christ’s giving his life for the sin of that very person. As I see it, Christ is the end of retribution.
“Immanuel” means the ideal has become real, the absolute has become a particular, and the invisible has become visible. The incarnation is the universe-sundering, history-altering, life-transforming, paradigm-shattering event of history.
Isaiah 56 this morning. “Preserve justice & do what is right.” For the life of me, I do not know how on earth an open set of eyes can look over our nation’s history & honestly deny a pervasive stronghold of white supremacy. I won’t deny it. As a follower of Jesus, I denounce it.
Our relationships with God, self, other human beings, and nature are all alienated. And we're supposed to be restoring them all.
Churches today are under enormous pressure to jettison the first two or the last two, but to not keep them all. Yet to give up any of them would make Christianity the handmaid of a particular political program and undermine a missionary encounter. 4/4
...and attractive today. The first two views (ethnic diversity and caring for the poor) sound “liberal,” and the last two (abortion and sexual ethics) sound “conservative.” But the third element, of course, sounds like no particular party. 3/4
