I agree with MMT about not using the household budget analogy for the government's budget. We should think about it the same way we consider the budget of a counterfeiter and thief.
As a nation, can we "afford" social security? Do we produce adequate goods and services to meet the needs of retirees?

The simple reality is that we can’t afford the current size of our Government. We’re spending too much. Our current weak politicians won’t tell you because they want your vote, but entitlements have to be cut. Social Security + Medicare. It’s not a debate anymore. It’s math.
