Our very own crime fighting K9 Bruno is a big fan of the snow! He also knows plenty of other K9s that will be watching for his snow pics! #PoliceK9
Great 12-ish months for the UT bioinformatics lab! Owen Queen (far right) got a Goldwater and Ashley Babjac (far left) just accepted her NSF GFRP! One of 8 bio and other informatics awardees/HM in CS/IS/ENG. Others @ UCLA, Berkley, MIT, Cornell, Harvard, Stanford and Princeton
First group picture in almost 2 years on the (entire) Weaving Rainbow Mountain mural next to the Third Creek greenway
Excited (but honestly a bit scared) to see/smell this the next day or so
There's a Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) from the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Greenhouse collection that's gearing up to bloom. It has been named Rotty Top! Good ol' RT can be seen at Hesler Biology Building Rm 402 (open 7am-7pm, Mon-Fri).
Great to see this work with Ian and co-led by @KButtonSimons get to the finish line!

Stomoxys genome paper is finally out! Thanks to @AttardoGeoff @richmeisel @rmwaterhouse @emgen_science @wasp_venom @ScottEmrich and many other who helped! Big thanks to Pia Olafson who did most of the work! bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
First paper with a collaborator on the UT Ag Campus now available online; @UTKbioinform PhD candidate Katrina Schlum is the lead author: bit.ly/3vn9b1s
Graduation weekend on Rocky Top! Congrats to my new PhDs Gabe (off to Asst. Prof @MSOE), Katrina (staff bioinformatician @CincyChildrens) and former PhD pre-move Dave (postdoc at @USDA_ARS in HI). In other good news, UTB undergrad Owen is a 2021 #GoldwaterScholarship recipient!
Also completed Bt resistance allele surveillance of field-caught Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm). We detected gene flow and known resistance alleles in Puerto Rico -- including variants found in Brazil -- as well as new candidate alleles. See: bit.ly/376xG7X
One of my first UT projects is now in press. Using viral metagenomics on captured rodents across post-Katrina New Orleans, host identity (which animal captured) was the most informative and post hurricane management had no detectable effect(s). See: bit.ly/2VeflDe
Submit your paper to GLBIO 2021! In the past, GLBIO papers were published in PLOS Computational Biology and PLOS ONE. We are negotiating and expect to publish with PLOS again for GLBIO 2021.
Short paper from my summer work is out! "PeakMatcher facilitates updated Aedes aegypti embryonic cis-regulatory element map." Thank you to my awesome collaborators for the opportunity to do some fun research! hereditasjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
Work from our codon work funded by our NIH R01... great job Khalique et al. (Milenkovic, Emrich, Clark and Li groups)
Took longer than usual but this work was published by RJ in PLos One in late 2020
New paper with @ScottEmrich on detecting inversions with PCA. Extends our earlier work to new data sets and shows the challenges of trying to predict karyotypes in the presence of pop structure

Teaching tomorrow, deciding to mix things up at last moment. We sequenced 4X cov of mini-maize on Wednesday. 12 ppl class, not much informatics. I'm thinking we touch the skim seq data....inspired by @ScottEmrich. Any suggestions? :) github.com/alexharkess/mi….
