In retrospect, the 2020 Democratic primary before COVID was hopelessly bad. The theme was "Hey. The economy is great, but you should vote for us cuz Trump has a lot of mean tweets" No chance the Dems would've won without COVID.

The Democratic candidates were getting pressed about reparations in the 2019-20 primary

hmm. what if we had a standardized test that sorted this out? every college bound student in the country could take it, maybe half for verbal half for math. then we’d be able to see a distribution of ability, which colleges could judge before admission. call it the SAT maybe?

If you read the report, you'd know that the problem is UCSD cannot administer the math placement test *before* admission. They don't know who is going to need remedial math. They can't make decisions based on knowledge they will get in the future

One of the biggest advantages Democrats have had over Republicans was being better on education. If Democrats keep doing shit like the, they'll completely lose their edge.

the ucsd story was way worse than what i gleaned from the tweets, a whole public education pathway appears to have broken down because it's optimized around not having the appearance of inequity instead of teaching people things

What this suggests to me is that California and many other states are seriously deteriorating in K-12 education. Every state needs to adopt the Mississippi model

I think the better move is to make med school a Bachelor's program for 5 or 6 years instead of requiring people to do 4 years of college plus 4 years of med school. It takes way too long to become a doctor in this country.

I really hope the left doesn't endorse Crocket. There's absolutely no benefit to having her win the primary.

I had a single white hair on my head that stopped being white. Looks like it went from white to black to red to black again. Lol. Hope it stays that way

What would be the externalities of having the government mass produce generic versions of drugs that are too expensive/short in supply? It seems like it would be a good idea

Thanks a lot, SCOTUS. If anyone wonders why we have a near-zero accountability policy for law enforcement—and an absolute-zero accountability policy for *federal* law enforcement—I’ll refer them to you.

Like I said, capping Grad PLUS loans was one of the only good things in the OBBB.

Santa Clara is one of the first law schools to publish 2026-27 tuition. Historically, Grad PLUS loans have had no limits. Starting next year, professional school borrowing will be capped at $50k/year. Notice anything about the trend in tuition? I expect many schools to copy this.

Gavin Newsom should veto SB 771

1/ SB 771, currently on Gavin Newsom's desk, combines unconstitutional goals, incomplete understanding of tech, and drafting that makes it worse. I wrote to Gov. Newsom urging him to veto this bill, which will surely meet the pointy end of the First Amendment & Section 230.

Wrote today for @TheArgumentMag about how students using AI in college is incredibly damaging — and its impacts when they exit University. I fear that non-trivial chunk of young people are just forgetting (or never learning) how to think.

I wish the Biden administration for antitrust went after health insurance companies, doctors, and hospitals instead of going after big tech companies. Higher healthcare costs are a much bigger problem than people having one or two search engines

I feel like this would've been considered a massive dog whistle and a minor scandal during Trump's first term x.com/shannonrwatts/…
