This rather bizarre looking larvae (c.3-4 mm long) will (hopefully) develop into one of the delightful Figwort weevils (Cionus sp.). Apparently they are covered in shiny goo which is distasteful to predators and parasites. On Common Figwort in our garden.
A team of entomologists & naturalists from #NorthernIreland & #Germany have described a new species of #beetle, previously unknown to science. The “Fence-climber Twiglet Weevil” was discovered by Buglife Conservation Officer @josh_ecology Read more👇 buglife.org.uk/news/colourful…
First British example of the weevil - gasterocercus depressirostris trapped in my VC15 moth trap on 27/9. A rare species in its central and Southern European range. Well worth potting anything unusual, not just moths!
There is a new weevil species in Northern Ireland, but we do not know what it is. Does anyone recognise it?
@WeevilRS anyone know of any info on parasitoids of Apoderus coryli ? I found a leaf roll with larva accompanied by what appeared to be larva of Braconid/ichneumon or something, I didn't collect it tho i have a history of failure rearing these things. Rolled it back up & left it
Looks like we have another weevil new to Britain. Look out for a bristly Polydrusus.
From a site in S Essex today, just under 5 mm. Appears to be Polydrusus inustus? All femora with a small, sharp tooth @MarkGurn @WeevilRS @Coleopterist

7⃣ The crafty work of the weevil, Hypera rumicis! When ready to pupate, the larva constructs a little 'golden cage' cocoon as seen here. Amazing! Found on Dock in July.
It's #weevilwednesday once more and today I bring you Deporaus betulae aka the Birch Leaf Roller. Isn't he handsome? We know he's a he because of those swollen femora at the back there 👍🏼 He's the Sir Chris Hoy of the weevil world 🚴♂️ @OlympusUK #60mmmacro #macrophotography
Struggling for beetles in November? Check your Diplolepis galls for Sitona lineatus! @britgalls @WeevilRS
#BeetleIllustrationOfTheDay : Otiorhynchus tenebricosus . Family #Curculionoidea . Thank to all who helped me identify this fabulous #weevil which I found hiding under a log. It was great fun to collage! @MarkGurn @WeevilRS @ValkovR @AshWhiffin
Acrossus luridus has many colour forms including all black. Here's how to distinguish the black form from Acrossus depressus #ScarabSkills
passed an Ash stump covered in King Alfred's Cakes, and thought I'd have a quick check... 10+ adult Platyrhinus resinosus, everyone's favourite walking bird dropping, and not a bad record for #Derbyshire #LockdownListing focuses the attention closer to home...
#speciesaday no. 129 (a day late) is Orobitis cyaneus, the violet Weevil. A tiny, long-legged weevil that is frequent on the chalk in Sussex. Tucks its huge legs and head in and looks like a seed. Another species much commoner with suction! @SussexWildlife @MarkGurn @WeevilRS
#speciesaday no. 130 is Tapeinotus sellatus. A (Na) scarce weevil that feeds on Yellow Loosestrife. This is the only one I have ever seen, suction-sampled from a mire in Hampshire last June @Hants_BIC @WeevilRS @MarkGurn
NEW provisional weevil checklist for Cheshire (VC58), South Lancs (VC59) & West Lancs (VC60) by Clive Washington. 1st #beetle regional list in 103yrs. Another great resource for NW recorders @RECORDLRC @NMBiodiversity @WeevilRS @BritEntSoc @GMrecordcentre bit.ly/2uP30J0
#speciesaday no. 118 is Anthribus fasciatus. The only other anthribid I've seen. I saw this once at @kneppcastle in 2015, not seen it since. Seems more frequent in Midlands. Chonky, cryptic, scarce. What isn't to like?! Wish there were more anthribids @WeevilRS @SussexEmerald
#speciesaday no. 117 Platyrhinus resinosus. Feeds on King Alfred's Cakes. Which it kind of looks like on the top, or a bit of bird-dropping mimic. On the underside, it's an even more convincing bird dropping mimic. It's really uncommon in Sussex @SussexWildlife @WeevilRS
