There's no widely accepted explanation for ball lightning as a phenomenon: It might be vaporized silicon from soil struck by lightning! The strike could break silica (SiO₂) into pure silicon vapor. As it cools, the silicon forms a glowing, charged aerosol as it reacts with O₂.
