Disabled people have been sounding the alarm on the #ClimateCrisis for years. Yet our community goes ignored, only to suffer as predicted each time there’s a crisis, and be met with empty promises of “doing better” next time. Disabled lives should not be a “teachable moment”!
Main challenge I’ve seen on the ground re:people accessing the civil defence payment is a lack of awareness + people not getting the full amount they’re entitled. Let your mates know the payment exists, and to ask for the maximum amount if they need it! workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-b…
Spent the day at Wesley Primary liaising with members of the community and sussing out their needs with WINZ/accessing the Civil Defence Payment. Good to see @efesocollins here too! Theres been an amazing community led effort in Roskill, outpouring of donations and volunteers!
Meanwhile, David Seymour: "Send the kids to school!"

you have tweeted nothing about civil defence advice, rain warnings, or where to get help in the past 3 days. why is ur first tweet since Auckland flooded and people died criticising central govt????

Pondering this morning if this is yet another impact of the housing market and the precarity for renters: what would it look like to give new tenants good information on things like tsunami zone, evacuation points, flood risk? Triggered when a bond is lodged, perhaps?
First emergency management statement at 6pm Friday: "... if you live in a flood prone area, be prepared to evacuate". Do renters typically know if their area if flood prone, especially for infrequent events? It's not like tenants get to see a LIM report before they move in.
Where was Wayne? The timing of the emergency declaration in Akl wasn't the big problem on Friday, but leadership and communication were right up there. My column was online yesterday and is in @nzherald today nzherald.co.nz/nz/simon-wilso…
Twitter is how I met my husband. How I found some of my best friends. How I learned so so SO much, & how I was able to participate in community & conversation when I was too ill to do it physically. Thank you forever to everyone who was part of that.
Here's a graphic from when there were efforts to get people to understand their responsibility in the chain of Covid transmission, and how their infection could lead to much suffering and death down the time line.
Today’s 3923 NZ Covid case number charted, plus a new chart of % of daily cases which are reinfections at the usual page. rnz.co.nz/news/in-depth/…
There’s countless of stories and reports on how people have been harmed by WINZ’s approach to relationships. We don’t need more reviews. We need to end the current approach that punishes people for seeking support and connection by removing their income static1.squarespace.com/static/60189fe…
No one should lose their income support because they’re deemed in a “relationship in the nature of marriage” The Minister of Social Development agrees we need to change the rules (‼️), but without prioritising this work people will be put in hardship by the status quo
