And its done! The Little Book of Aliens. Everything you need to know about everything there is to know about life in the Universe (out there and, you know, maybe but probably not, here). This week's @bigthink post #Arewealone bigthink.com/13-8/little-bo…
Astrobiology turns out to have profound insights about how to create a "mature" technosphere that can endure on timescales approaching those of geology. I really enjoyed this discussion with Claire Webb in Venice last year (but man it was cold in that room).
In our lifetime, we learned that nearly every star has its own planets. Earth is one story among trillions. 🎙️Adam Frank (@AdamFrank4) on Futurology podcast: “How to Spot an Alien Civilization” youtube.com/watch?v=O95OHZ…

In case folks missed it. Here is a short post with the link to Jason Wright's explanation of the numerous problems with Avi Loeb's 3I/Atlas shenanigans. everymansuniverse.com/p/3i-atlas-ali…

A wonderful conversation with Claire Webb of @berggruenInst about "The Planetary", a new view of the human future that begins with astrobiology. Part of their new @FuturologyPod podcast. youtube.com/watch?v=O95OHZ…
It's an illustration of a comet. What fucking Ai?
I am more than OK with what The Galileo Project wants to do a'la UAPs. But Loeb has destroyed his reputation as an honest broker in science so that, sadly, hurts the project.
Loeb wants to fund a billion dollar project to look for aliens.
Yes! Why is it so hard for people to get this when they want to go on about Loeb's "anomalies"? As Wright shows in his post, most of Loeb's anomalies are demonstrably wrong and the rest are in the "zone of awesome" astronomers expect for comets.
“We Expect 3I/ATLAS to be Anomalous We do! This is only the 3rd interstellar comet we’ve seen, and it’s bound to behave differently from Solar System comets for two big reasons and two little ones.”
It's the glass of whiskey that matters. Bulliet Rye, thank you very much bartender.
But it is! It's an interstellar object showing new comet behavior. Why? Because its from another friggin solar system! It is behaving exactly like we expect comets to behave but also showing new comet physics and chemistry. So much fun! I wish you guys would get that.
It does not have to be either "aliens" or "just a comet". It could be "a comet with new physics".
Here is a great review from @LeeBillings on the actual science around 3I/Atlas. It seems like lots of folks won't care about this amazing object unless it turns out to be aliens - which it won't (though I'd be psyched too be wrong). scientificamerican.com/article/the-in…
Dude... we are actively looking for them. It's a huge chunk of the science I and my colleagues are doing right now. But we recognize our responsibility to the public in carrying out that search - and interacting with the media - demands hewing to high standards.
Astronomers believe in big bang. At least aliens exist somewhere.
Again read Wright post about anomalies. Most Loeb claims = demonstrably wrong. Remaining ones are expected as part of comet science. No one but Loeb sees even remote chance this is anything other than comet. But they don't get their faces splattered all over TV.
But he is saying it as a bizarre probability & not the only probability. Also he has always said it like "However, if it does this/that then it could be something intelligent". It has anomalies and he has been quite accurate about those as well. No wonder why he avoids socials 🤷♂️
Read article from Jason Wright. He gives details & why astronomers are so frustrated . Note, Loeb claims not in scientific papers (which would never make it through peer-review) but on Medium page which then leads to media coverage as "Harvard Astronomers says... aliens!"
Great piece by astronomer and SETI leader Jason Wright on the endless, exhausting claims about 3I/Atlas by Avi Loeb. "zero planetary scientists give Avi’s claims any credence... because he’s demonstrably wrong" sites.psu.edu/astrowright/20…
Everyone knows outer space is big & empty but what about inner space? What about the space inside solid stuff. One of the strangest discoveries of modern physics is that solid matter is a big fat lie. Today on Everymans Universe. everymansuniverse.com/p/why-doesn-t-…
We have a faculty position open at the URochester Physics department in Complexity Science. If you are an ambitious young researcher come join an ambitious growing program. Please apply. Deadline coming very soon. apply.interfolio.com/173432
Lots of fun response to this piece. Imagining a Dark Matter "sector" for particle physics was a sensible response to data. But what if we never find Dark Matter particles? everymansuniverse.com/p/what-is-dark…
