To clarify - by “whatever we want” I meant the appropriate amount that we are legally (and ethically) allowed to charge. But it doesn’t matter how much OR how little we bill; DRG based reimbursement only pays the set fee. Insurance wouldn’t pay us more $$ even if we charged more.
Unless you serve primarily Medicare/Medicaid patients and your hospital loses money on every single admission. We charge whatever we want, doesn’t mean we’ll actually get anything. Our safety net hospital is fighting to keep its doors open because others take advantage.
Note: these are my opinions & I am NOT speaking on behalf of my organization I didn’t disagree with you, I just don’t think it applies across the board . A safety net hospital is not out for profit; we care for all regardless of ability to pay. Zero reimbursement is also a factor

Want another reason why healthcare costs are insane ? Hospitals will not only charge a facility fee and other random costs BUT ALSO , if they believe the insurance company is willing to pay MORE THAN WHAT WAS ON THE PATIENT BILL, THEY WILL INCREASE THE BILL to the insurance

Genuinely shocked by the awful snow management in Hennepin County this AM. I didn’t see a single plow on my way in to work at ~6:15am. Seemed like 394 was plowed once a few hours ago or not at all. Also every road, local or highway, was wickedly/deceivingly icy. Drive safe!
Based on how busy the roads were between 3am-6am, I’m predicting a hell’ish commute. Breaks my money making heart. I’ve handed off more orders to other drivers than I would have liked to, to make sure the schedule isn’t too tight.
