Keeping my account around on here, will still check in mostly because YIMBY-posting on this cursed platform is still needed, but this time we do actually have the critical mass to move to The Other Place. @andrew.donnellan.id.au
Housing in Australia is both too scarce and too expensive. Yet our major cities are among the least dense of their size in the world. Our latest Grattan report show how we can reform our urban planning rules to allow for more homes and better cities. 🧵
let's gooooooooooooooooo
3-storey townhouses and apartments should be permitted on all residential land in all capital cities to help fix Australia’s housing crisis. Building more homes will create cheaper housing and more productive cities. Our new report shows how. buff.ly/NfAM6C7 #auspol
thank you to this tribunal member for a highly quotable paragraph for lawyers to use in future submissions
I’ve found the most based YIMBY-pilled VCAT member. Cites his own fire quote from previous case Approves 11 storey building over NIMBY complaints Elaborates further 🔥✍️
Something where there is a clear point of agreement between UK housing Twitter and the rest of us: if someone wants to build nice traditional architecture, don't have regulations that actively force them to make it worse
Obviously that cheap stuff is by no means always good (it’s the cheap version of popular styles) but it’s illustrative. In regulatory terms I would first ‘do no harm’ and remove the things that push against popular design (a huge issue in the UK).
If we truly want to maintain Canberra's status as "the bush capital", then we need reforms that enable us to build housing in those areas already occupied, not enable further sprawl that will undermine the bush capital.
anon here correctly diagnoses me as "autistic" and "nerd", the rest of the analysis leaves a bit to be desired but they've gotten partway at least
Saying “aesthetics don’t matter” exposes YIMBYism for what it really is - a pack of subnormal, condescending, autistic faux-utilitarians running interference for rapacious developers. YIMBYs are ultimately just a subset of libertarians, which is to say: contemptible fkn nerds
Congrats to Howard Maclean of @GreaterCanberra on being named a finalist for ACT’s Young Australian of the Year!
It's been an absolute honour to be there over the last four years helping Howard build Canberra's planning-posting-to-policy pipeline, and it's only mildly terrifying to think that our Discord server has left a permanent imprint on the built environment of this city
Today I was announced as one of the finalists for the ACT Young Australian of the year. First of all, this was only possible - and the real credit should go to - the team at @GreaterCanberra and everyone in @MissingMidCBR. A thread about how I got here. australianoftheyear.org.au/recipients/how…
having aesthetic preferences is fine, you should remove barriers that stop good aesthetics and encourage relevant people to embrace good aesthetics don't mandate aesthetic preferences whose importance is dwarfed by other things, and don't expect doing so to overcome NIMBYism
All this is to say, aesthetics really don't matter that much. Build what the community needs. Indulging NIMBY arguments about blocking homes and infrastructure on aesthetic grounds is a mug's game - don't play it.
the ACT's health services can now provide assisted suicide. Lord, have mercy on this city
The British YIMBY movement seems to be full of well-meaning people who consider themselves "laser focused" on the UK's most important domestic policy issue, and then deciding that they'll solve it through holding block-by-block referendums Please learn from the colonies kthx
I think the neighbours should have been able to insist that the new house here (on the left) was built in a more similar style to the other buildings around it. What do you think? Let me know below 👇
- where the greatest number of my friends are - in an apartment so, uh, right where I live right now
If you could live anywhere in Australia and money and job wasn't an issue where would you live and what type of property would you live in? You can't say you want to live somewhere as it was 20 years ago, it has to be as it is today. I'd love to hear people's answers. 2/2
this makes the ACT's proposed territory priority projects amendment bill look weak in comparison
The new Planning Amendment Bill is an enormous deal, and we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure it passes. It’s a perfect time to join @yimbymelbourne!
one of the great things about following NZ twitter is that now I get enough news about NZ councils to develop opinions that counterbalance the fact that I have opinions on US city councils

we're going to get this done. it's actually going to get done
It's full steam ahead for the Missing Middle Housing Reforms, with today's release of the revised draft amendment! Find out more ➡️ buff.ly/uAvhArT

it really really annoys me when our opposition accuses us of not understanding that planning isn't the only constraint. of course it's not the only constraint we're not stupid
