Education Department wipes out special ed office in shutdown layoffs, union says usatoday.com/story/news/edu… via @USATODAY
NEW: The Education Dept. layoffs continued overnight, w/ the main office in charge of special ed funding being “decimated,” as one person described. “They cut just about everyone that works with IDEA funding,” said another. “I’m not sure how these programs exist moving forward.”
Demographic crisis is coming sooner than you may think. We've hit peak 18-year-old. Unless colleges enroll less qualified students, they'll see total enrollment fall rapidly. Elementary, middle, and high schools will see class sizes fall and many will have to shut down too.

"Plenty of red states are failing. We have a winning playbook and everyone should use it."
some familiar ideas in this piece from David Brooks in the New York Times. nytimes.com/2025/10/09/opi…. But I think he overstates the case: red vs blue doesn't predict much about education. Plenty of red states are failing. We have a winning playbook and everyone should use it. it.

Mississippi in particular had a very successful overhaul. But another very strong state for education is Massachusetts. I agree with Kelsey, a red vs blue frame feels culture warry and unhelpful.

College enrollment is collapsing across America at the same time that birth rates are collapsing. This is a huge problem. Yes, the "wage premium" is real. But it's also hollowing out entire cities built around a university. Great piece from @kylascan. theargumentmag.com/p/what-happens…

It really does look as though this man was arrested for posting a meme, and, as usual, I have to wonder how drunk the magistrate was when he signed the warrant.

A Tennessee man was arrested for "threats of mass violence on school property" for posting this meme on Facebook criticizing Trump's comments about a previous school shooting. Insane.
