Congratulations to @ananthkrishnan and @the_hindu for curating this excellent volume on Indian Perspectives on #China. It was a pleasure to contribute a chapter to this edited volume alongside some of the leading experts in the field.
Here's a sneak preview looking at this volume and its fantastic contributors -- all you need to know on China and India-China relations from some of India's best minds on China, and just as PM Modi heads for his first visit there in 7 years:

Kudos to the government for eliminating the onerous, competitiveness-crippling & arbitrary quality control orders (QCOs) on imports of synthetic yarn & fibers This is a critical policy action when India's apparel exports are under unfair pressure from the Trump tariffs
Our two pieces on India's trade policy The first discusses growing protectionism via a new, arbitrary & non-transparent instrument-quality control orders, taking India back to licence-quota Raj They undermine export competitiveness, especially of labor-intensive exports 1/

The writer has not written off tanks, but MBTs. For instance he says light tanks like Zorawar are needed. Cost is very much a factor today as counter systems have become cheap and abundant.
Central to deterrence, how? Insofar as occupying territory is concerned, the space for large-scale conventional land warfare is severely limited. With the advancement in modern warfare, there are better cost-effective ways to gain leverage -think of deep strike capabilities
MBTs are central to deterrence & rapid response. No drone swarm can occupy or hold territory — tanks can @DefProdnIndia @AVANI_PR
These kinds of ad hominem attacks are not appreciated. Be open to ideas. The goal is to have debates and discussions in India's national interest.
I am sure the writer has never entered the Army unit where MBT runs .....Too much focus on cost and new modern warfare like drone .... MBTs are not obsolete — they are evolving. Modern armour fights as part of a networked, drone-integrated system, not in isolation.
Russia's advances in Ukraine are not a result of its armoured thrust. It's a function of the massive power differential between the two armies. And despite that massive power differential, Ukraine took out 25% of its pre war inventory.
Ukraine conflict (2022-25) proves that both sides still rely heavily on tanks — even after massive UAV usage. Losses have driven innovation, not abandonment, of MBTs (APS retrofits, cage armour, drone integration).
And where in the Indian context do you envisage urban combat? Israel-Gaza and Russia-Ukriane are not the right case studies to argue for the continued relevance of MBTs. The sheer power asymmetry that exists bw actors in the abovementioned cases doesn't exist with Pak or China
Israel’s Gaza operations (2023-24) revalidated the armour-infantry synergy for urban combat and area control.
This isn't correct. Life cycle cost of maintaining MBTs is much higher. Also, not convinced if spreading the cost of MBTs over 30 yrs is the right argument. Cost matters. If all platforms are equally vulnerable, why field a super expensive platform in the middle?
Cost ≠ weakness. A ₹64 cr MBT serves 30+ years — far longer than rotating drone fleets needing constant replenishment. Lifecycle cost per combat year remains competitive @AVANI_PR
I agree. They are future MBTs. And the costs are a severe underestimation. The per unit itself will cost at least 70-80 cr (Arjun's cost is already at 70 cr without new specifications). And then add the R&D costs. The cost will certainly go up to 1.5 lakh cr. Add Lock-in cost too
India’s FRCV project (₹57,000 cr) isn’t “just tanks.” It’s investment in indigenous R&D, powerpacks, armour composites, AI & export tech — long-term strategic capability. @AVANI_PR @DefProdnIndia
I see your point, but the level of support by China for Russia's war against Ukraine pales in comparison to the level of support that the U.S. has provided for Israel. That disparity basically erases any insights we might have otherwise gleaned from the comparison.
How about creating “Special Governance Zones”, same laws & rules, but administered differently? livemint.com/opinion/online…
