Direct lightning strikes cause minimal damage to Dipteryx oleifera. But these same strikes effectively kill parasitic vines and neighboring trees that compete with the species for light and nutrients.

Hurricane Erin Anamoly. The lightning strokes were located over 250 Km SE of these flashes. The optical flash sequence matches the audio pulses detected by my Nasa VLF-3 Receiver. @NASA @NOAA @NWS @theAGU @AMSAtmoElect @atmos_elect @ametsoc @WMO @weatherchannel @WeatherNation

A 1000ft wrought-iron lattice tower makes for quite a good lightning conductor it seems. (I imagine that the lightning rod is connected to ground rods through downleads, and not through the tower itself). @atmos_elect @swshargi #onweer #bliksem @InfosReseaux
