Today we ringed our first full-grown Red Kite. I wouldn't normally include my ugly mug but thought it's worth doing so as a size comparison. This is a first-year bird and the underwing shots are particularly helpful. Hopefully the first of many!

No. What happens in Doñana DOES NOT STAY in Doñana. After more than two years of work, we’ve published an article demonstrating that the poor condition of Doñana negatively affects waterbirds across the ENTIRE continent! Thread below! 🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/gc…

The spring that keeps on giving @FI_Obs! Today saw another amazing fall, with 37 Red-backed Shrike (new day record), 34 Icterine Warbler (more than 3x the previous highest day count!), 7 Bluethroat, 6 Marsh Warbler, a Blyth’s Reed and a rare spring Barred Warbler. Madness!

3cy+ male White-spotted Bluethroat trapped and ringed at Woolston Eyes this morning. The second Cheshire record of cyanecula (first also from Woolston). Can't be many sites that casually offer 14+ Garganey and 12+ Black-necked Grebe as back-up cast... ebird.org/checklist/S144…

A truly crazy record! On 18/05/2023 I had this CR Ringed Plover @RSPBFrampton. Just received that it was ringed on 26/11/2018 on Bruce beach, Bubaque island, Bijagós archipelago off the coast of Guinea - Bissau, Africa! Before being sighted in Sweden in 2019 then this year in May

After a rough crossing to Aberdeen from Lerwick last night, it was nice to start the day with this smart juv. Baird's Sandpiper at Meikle Loch in Aberdeenshire - it would have been rude not to! What a little cracker, and a great way to round off the trip.

A new breeding species for Fair Isle this year, as a pair of Common Rosefinch have nested at the Obs, successfully fledging one youngster! It's been a real privilege to keep an eye on them, and brilliant to now see the juvenile out exploring the isle

A huge privilege to go and ring some young Goshawks on Monday evening. I do see quite a lot of these birds while working, but seeing these so close was special. Third pic is female feet and fourth is female compared to male. Female tarsus width almost double that of the male!
