Saw Bruce Norris' "Downstate," at Playwrights Horizons, last night, and haven't stopped living with it since. It's steeped in a cool acute empathy that makes you identify with damaged people you usually avoid thinking about. Absorbing, compelling, mind-opening. Essential theater.
