If you want to understand why violent crime in Chicago did not decline here as in other large cities, and why it's in the news for it now, I suggest learning about two big city policy actions of the last 24 years. A thread. 1/15
Gay people aren't shooting up straight night clubs. Black people aren't shooting up white grocery stores. Latinos are not shooting up Walmarts. Jewish people are not shooting up Christian churches. The violence is coming from one demographic: Alt-right radicalized men.
Defunding the police doesn't seem so radical when you realize that the NYPD spends $762 million just on overtime. In just one year.
bell hooks: "We have to constantly critique imperialist white supremacist patriarchal culture because it is normalized by mass media and rendered unproblematic.”
When the history of how fascists came to power in the United States is written, it will be particularly unkind to the liberal academics, journalists, and politicians who fear-mongered about "crime" by the poor and pushed surveillance and state violence as the solution.
Did you know that the for-profit cash bail system exists only in the U.S. and the Philippines? Did you know that 500,000 human beings are in jail cells right now separated from their families before being convicted of anything, most of them solely because they can pay cash?
If you are willing to call on elected officials, executives, & good old Karen to resign for misconduct but want to wait for all the facts or remain entirely silent when police kill unarmed people, you are part of the problem rather than the solution. Take a principled position.
Because it’s new PD season my number one unsolicited new PD advice is: if it feels unjust it’s because it is unjust, & you should say so and fight it. Even if a judge or a prosecutor or even another defense attorney is numb to it and gives you the ol “it’s always been this way.”
When you understand that the safest communities are those with the most resources you understand that when cities defund schools and services to fund police they are literally making cities less safe, not more.
If you demand peaceful protests from oppressed people because you hate violence but don't address the violence of their oppression then you don't hate violence you hate consequences.
One of the wild things we’re about to see is how much cops hate drug decriminalization, not because it makes us less safe but because it makes them more irrelevant.
White men have always been given birthright citizenship and due process of the law. So they didn’t need the 14th A to do recognize that for them. If you weren’t a baseball you’d understand the history of the nation you find yourself in.
At the park, after asking me to sign a petition for his uncle to run as a police community liaison & failing to answer my question about his uncle’s stance on police and community relations, this man told me I “looked like a defund the police girl”— didn’t know we had a look 💁♀️
when you get a good ruling, leave the court room as fast as possible
I’ve played enough Legend of Zelda games to know that if you find an old flute you actually have to play it in order to right the wrongs of the past and continue on with your quest to save the world.
I get many incarcerated male clients with vocal wives, mothers and girlfriends who call every day for them, advocate for them, appear at every court date. Female inmates never receive the same support from husbands, boyfriends or fathers. Many times, female inmates are alone
