Why font rendering looks better on Mac than Windows

oh, it appears as if you have summoned me there are several reasons as to why: 1. macOS does not use hinting hinting is a technique to improve the sharpness of text on low-resolution screens and allow outline fonts to be rendered as bitmaps at a variety of sizes. it works by…

⚠️Science fiction close to reality. ⚠️ 1. LLMs recognize patterns in DNA sequences (as a language). 2. LLM creates new patterns. 3. New patterns are artificially built. 4. Ergo, new artificial life forms emerge. I’m not sure we’re ready for this. x.com/IterIntellectu…

holy shit, it’s happening. a new paper in science just presented “evo”, an ai model that learns biology like a language, from single dna mutations to entire genomes. it doesn’t just predict biology; it can design it. we’re so close to creating new life i can taste it.

If you have multiple monitors and use a Mac, the upgrade to macOS Sequoia is worth it just for Stage Manager. It's so much better than multiple desktops.

Does anybody know if this will actually be compatible with "Find My" with Apple? Did Google and Apple actually work together? From Google this morning:

Looking forward to release of the Apple Vision Pro. The new spatial experiences this technology opens up in education, trades and manufacturing, and research will no doubt move us forward.

Happy Bitcoin Liberation Day!

The unapologetic optimism of a better future is baked into Disney's vision. We used to have that. We could use a lot more of that today.

The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, shortened to EPCOT or E.P.C.O.T., is an unfinished concept for a planned community, intended to sit on amundeveloped land. It was the dream of Walt Disney that he made it his last request to complete. This is his dream:

People are just starting to realize the power of Local LLMs Especially with new Apple chips. It's a game-changer Let me show you: Falcon is 180B LLM. It is the size of GPT3. How fast would it run on your Mac? Apple M3 Max: 3.5 tokens/sec We can compare it to 2 x A100 (2 x…

It's interesting how you can build a system with one approach in mind and learn how the users actually decide to use it. The corollary to this is that it's important to design a controlled amount of flexibility in your systems to support this.

To do this from Safari in macOS 14 Sonoma, simply browse to the website you want and choose File > Add to Dock... When you click on the Dock icon, it will open up in a "chromeless" (no pun intended) Safari browser instance and look like any other app.

"Add to dock" in macOS Sonoma is a game-changer for web apps feeling native. Not sure I see the point in most Electron apps on this platform any more. So easy to use, bootstraps with the correct cookies, so login is already sorted. Super nice.

A philosophy degree requires a large amount of writing. The act of writing well refines half-formed thoughts into deeper ideas. As a freshman (30+ years ago) at the @UWMadison, my Philosophy 101 professor, Terry Penner, impressed this upon me. It's stuck with me ever since.

A noticeable pattern: whenever I find someone's thinking particularly impressive, it usually turns out that they have a philosophy degree.
