Increasing the surface area of flour makes it burn very easily. #slowmotion #BritishScienceWeek
#isitok that @ParalympicsGB won double the number of golds just today that Australia have won all games. Should @adamhills start rehearsing his can can???
I've been creating a little scientists timeline for the last couple of weeks to put up in my primary science classroom. I'm aware that I don't have enough balance. Any ideas for more representation very much appreciated. canva.com/design/DAF2S5m… Feel free to use/copy
Doing some cleaning & need to clear some old copies of @RSC_EiC. Before they get binned if anyone wants a copy of an issue from the past 10 years, it's probably here! Also, been great to reminisce over some fantastic issues. Thanks @seerymk @doc_kristy and the whole eic community
Pupils in Form 6 were looking at how surface area affects rate of reaction. This experiment looked at how ordinary plain flour can burn when the surface area is significantly increased. Our Science teacher’s eyebrows were not damaged in this demonstration! #science #experiment
Quite possibly my favourite demo. It's not exactly microscale (although I only use around 10ml methanol). But as @UncleBo80053383 says, in a little you can see a lot. Slow mo also helps show a lot of detail here too.
Our Form 4 class has been learning about fire & the products of combustion as part of their science lessons. Here we see a fuel burn in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide & water. #science #chemistry #education
Our marvellous Director of Studies, Mr Banks, has captured an amazing photograph that has made it to the final of the Countryfile photography competition! We would love for him to win, so please do vote! To vote online: bbc.co.uk/programmes/art… To vote by phone: 09011 98 90 10
Last night was a super exciting evening! My little red squirrel made it onto @BBCCountryfile! What incredible photos to be a part of. I still can't actually believe it. If you are able to give a lovable red squirrel a vote, that would be very kind!
Calling all #chemtweeps! One of our own - my pal Peter @chemstuff - had a photograph selected for the BBC Countryfile 2024 calendar! To vote for your favourite (which might just be the cheeky red squirrel!), please click here! 👇 bbc.co.uk/programmes/art…

Clearing my grandmothers house and coming across these old clothing patterns (possibly from the 40s onwards). Does anyone know if they might be useful? We'd love to see them used??? @V_and_A @doc_kristy
Here's our research testing if teachers could spot ChatGPT essays. Short answer: no! They were more likely to flag up real children's writing as ChatGPT. daisychristodoulou.substack.com/p/can-teachers…
We are very excited to announce that for British science week… the registration for our free chocolate kit is now open!!! Scan the QR code and register your school to receive your kit, numbers are limited! #RoySocChem #foodscience #JKP27 #chemistry
Not sure how I feel about this! Interesting article to observe AI working, thankfully probably not quite replacing the human author ... Yet. 😱 Great experiment @RSC_EiC
When you set homework, you’re probably not expecting students to get an AI bot to do it for them. But then you probably weren’t expecting, an AI bot to write an EiC article either edu.rsc.org/opinion/ai-bot… #chatchemistry #edutwitter
Looking for #Primary #Science leaders in Australia, USA and South Africa to take part in a short interview. DM me if you're interested :-) #ASEchat #SciEd #PrimaryScience
Today it was announced that Ofqual are proposing to keep the provision of a formula sheet in GCSE physics. Something I FULLY support. It has been opened for public consultation. The response form is here - make your opinion heard! @ChatPhysics ofqual.citizenspace.com/public/gcse-ma…
A lot of work going on in the background over the last few months. Really excited to be putting on a Chamber Music course at my home. Just looking for a final couple of players. 1 timpanist, 1 violinist. Amazing tutors and a brilliant chamber orchestra guaranteed!
I'm still devastated by this closure. My home for 4 years and the lecturers who made my life and career possible. Sadly I can't join the party this weekend, but I'm sure you'll have a good send off. Wishing everyone @BangorChemistry the very best.
It’s the last working day of existence for Bangor Chemistry today- thanks to staff and students who got us this far. Best of luck to Paddy, Keith and Lorrie who are leaving the University. Good luck to Enlli and Gwynfor who are staying on - photos by Steve Swinburn
