I might be wrong, but computer scientists back then basically use what I think was called electromechanical calculator or something to perform general purposes of a computer.
We now use the same keyboard but keys are mapped to copy & paste

I wasn't around in 1956 but that looks a lot like what I had in my hands recently.
Nope. At best, it was front panel switches. At worst it was wire plug boards. Serial devices came later.
They would have been thrilled for all that. Before the programming languages, it was Punch card time.
There is no "Space" or "Enter" things in binary strings. 😉
