I unreservedly apologise to Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng (@fabacademic) for the malicious remarks I made in a series of posts on the X platform on the 9th of October 2024. Upon reflection, I now realise that the claims I made about Prof Phakeng were deeply harmful.
You can recognize that European Jews have been persecuted for centuries, while also recognizing that this does not give them a license to colonize, steal land, and kill Arabs who have literally nothing to do with aforementioned persecution. Really not that complicated.

Telling Coates that his book sounded like it could be in the "backpack of an extremist" was a specific racist remark meant to evoke images of Arab men and implicating Coates in terrorism by extension. He wrote about how Zionism was racist, and Dokoupil instantly proved his point.
This exchange should be studied for a long time. The interviewer read the book, not to gain new insight, but to get angry that it wasn't written from the perspective he preferred. He expected Coates to crumble under his onslaught. But Coates didn't. That's what makes it powerful.
