This is exactly why contact tracing should not collect location data: even with local DP, you’d then have to solve an impossible utility/privacy trade off. Better to avoid the trade off by not collecting locations at all, have both privacy and public health utility
The tragedy of this (not) location-hiding picture is that the problem is a textbook example of what local Differential Privacy would solve (right @bipr?). Then we'd get rigorous guarantees for an appropriately parameterised algorithm that re-id was hard. @chrisculnane
The most important point to understand about contact tracing and privacy is, despite your intuitions, that tracing can be done without storing where you’ve been. This is the essence of Google/Apple’s approach (and many other recent proposals)
