Happy 25th Birthday, Wikipedia!
A new online encyclopedia, “Wikipedia,” is launched as a side project of encyclopedia Nupedia.
Wikipedia is vulnerable because deletionists are continually hacking away at the long tail. There are millions of articles that can be written.
I'm looking forward to higher quality more than higher quantity. Higher quantity would be cool, too—Wikipedia dominates in large part *because* of its long tail. We'll see!
That's interesting. The "pragmatic hardliner" phrase is lifted from Britannica.
Ayatollah Khamenei: "Pragmatic hardliner" Donald Trump: "Authoritarian" @Wikipedia has a problem.
Travelling back in time to look at the Wikipedia: Neutral point of view policy as it was originally written by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. The text can be found in the history on Wikipedia or posted as this article on Encyc. encyc.org/wiki/Neutral_p…
This is why we need multiple platforms. There will always be mobs that try to enforce conformity, and large numbers afraid to speak up.
When over 40 anti-Israel advocacy groups mobilize to silence Wikipedia founders @jimmy_wales and @lsanger for raising legitimate concerns about bias in the “Gaza genocide” entry, they expose how coordinated campaigns now openly suppress the very principle of neutrality. Pathetic
Not on Encyc. We can still write!
I’m always blown away how random 19th century farmers were more erudite in their writing than Ivy League PhDs are today. I don’t think there’s any way around it: our human capital is at the lowest point since the country’s founding
Nice picture!
One hectare of marginal Scottish grazing land: - Cattle: 450kg of beef annually - Crops: Literally nothing, the soil is too poor and the terrain too steep 65% of UK agricultural land is marginal grazing land. "Just grow crops instead!" On what? The sides of mountains? Peat…
The Pearl is great!
The worst thing English teachers ever did was convince us that “great literature” is dull as hell. They put tedious, hard-to-parse works before us, and then graded us on the dumbest elitist analysis they could find. Did we read Jane Austen? H.G.Wells? Alexander Dumas? No. We…
We made a new MediaWiki extension. The RichResults extension generates a JSON-LD script with structured data in the head of every article page. This can be used by search engines to make snippets. If you run a MediaWiki, feel free to try it. mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension…
Hi John Stossel. You should report on how great Encyc is. We are not really FULL of propaganda. Maybe some? Our good information will fortify AI and make it work right.
I once reported on how great Wikipedia was. Now, it’s FULL of propaganda. That’s a big problem because its bad information corrupts AI and search results: @npovmedia @AshleyRindsberg
