Same here… how I miss the low budget Australian academic conferences of the nineties, when the morning tea Arnott’s Variety biscuit packs still varied from region to region… “Choc…? Ripples…?” [makes mental note to stop by the supermarket on the way to the train]
A deeply uncool thing you need to know about me... I bloody love a conference! Budget hotel breakfast. Awkward coffee networking. Slightly drunk professionals in a karaoke bar telling you their life story. Lanyards constantly getting caught on things. Free keyrings. Love it.
Token account anniversary post, suitably hard-edged op art theme…
There’s something satisfyingly proto-Douglas Adams about Galactic society embracing the concept of “non-U”… and the line “The alien's name was Khgnjsdag, which didn't really matter except to the alien” helps…
On introducing characters: "The alien was a strange looking beast. Even by the broad standards of the Galactic recognition code it was definitely non-U. [...] The alien's name was Khgnjsdag, which didn't really matter except to the alien."

Now to solve the contemporaneous mystery of whether Australian Opposition Leader Gough Whitlam really called Prime Minister Billy McMahon a “runt” (as per Hansard)…
In 1971, Canadian PM Pierre Trudeau insisted he’d mouthed the words ‘fuddle duddle’ to an opponent in parliament. In 2015 his son, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, finally admitted his father had mouthed ‘fuck off’.
Time to dust off Comeng’s “Comert” proposal from 1973 (a cut-and-cover light railway along Pittwater Road to the Manly Ferry). Didn’t progress far enough to have an online presence but it was featured in the last year of “Railway Transportation”: trove.nla.gov.au/work/13406400
The Sydney Metro train network will not be extended to the northern beaches despite the area’s chronic public transport and traffic congestion woes, transport authorities have confirmed dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/manl…
“You see, there’s an English lord in an Aston Martin taking too long at an airport drop-off zone so this US oil baron in a Dino drag races him through the Riviera while a bubblegum song plays and… no, come back, seriously, it’s one of the best TV shows, ever…”
Tony Curtis and Roger Moore practise for their bar brawl in the introductory episode, Overture. As producer Bob Baker observed: "You have these two guys fighting over how many olives you have in a drink; certainly, you're not going to take it seriously from that point onwards."
A gorgeous photo which, nevertheless, illuminates the cursed farewell gesture of the NCDC in green lighting a massive late-eighties shopping mall across the Ainslie Avenue axis…

One of my favourite “London lives up to its pop culture hype” moments was getting back to my hotel room, crashing on the sofa, turning on the tv and finding ‘The New Avengers’ episode “Sleeper”, with our heroes walking past buildings I’d walked past a few hours earlier…
Sleeper. Deserted Avengerland locations are always eerily effective, and here it is the whole of London north of the river which has been sent to sleep by a new S-95 gas. The most ambitious ever Avengers shoot, with more than 30 locations involved, most in central London.
So did Henry VIII pen any other stone cold bangers or did he just drop ‘Greensleeves’ and call it a day?
I continue to insist that the point when everything started going downhill was the day Arnott’s discontinued the Sevilla…
Arnotts Sevilla Biscuits 1973. They took these away and gave you 50 kinds of boring Tim Tams instead.
TFW you’re in a planning meeting for possible events around a British project, someone suggests Morris Dancing and every gen-x around the table shudders…
Filming of Children of the Stones taking place in Avebury, Wiltshire, during the summer drought of 1976. The cast included: Iain Cuthbertson; Gareth Thomas; Freddie Jones; Veronica Strong. Arguably, one of the most atmospheric, disturbing children's dramas seen on UK television.
