Thank you ! Here’s a little squadron we assembled in the garden when my father died:
A beautiful piece by Rachel Cooke’s husband Tony Quinn. His description of Rachel’s late conversion to Catholicism is inexpressibly moving. Too many women my age are dying of ovarian cancer. My beloved friend Zoe in August, Rachel & Susanna Gross last week observer.co.uk/style/features…
So many lovely reviews coming from our listeners. We are delighted and very grateful! Do keep them coming - it really, really helps! @murielzagha @SuzanneRaine2
Wonderful news!
Some "new" pieces for organ by J.S. Bach were premiered in Leipzig today by Ton Koopman. The discovery is thanks to Peter Wollny from the Bach Archive. You can read about it here: theguardian.com/music/2025/nov…
All Slow/ough Hor/use/s fans, read on - a really entertaining essay:
I'm proud to have an essay in the wonderful book 'Spies in History: From the Ancient World to the Silver Screen', published by Bokförlaget Stolpe and edited by @_paullay. Here's the original piece, first published on @EngelsbergIdeas: engelsbergideas.com/essays/the-slo…
Such extraordinary work - I’m transported (in time and emotion) straight back to the Weald (must look out my Shell Guide):
'Road to the Farm.' (1944) I find it difficult to think of any British landscape painter of Rowland Hilder's generation (he was born in 1905) whose work is as widely known but whose name is not. His work touched a strain of nostalgia for an unchanged and unchanging landscape.
I watched The Remains of the Day for the first time last week because of Anthony Hopkins’ recently released memoir. I still can’t stop thinking about this film…this performance. Hopkins captures repressed emotion as well as any actor I’ve ever seen. Please give this movie a shot
Should be ready in time for the Ashes
1960s Britain, a place where smartly dressed chaps spent their days in the countryside making cricket bats. 🏏 ⏳️
Absolutely mythical scene

#Ashes No batter in the last 50 years has faced more balls in a Test series in Aus than Alastair Cook in 2010/11 — 1,438 deliveries across 7 innings. That’s an absurd 205 balls every innings. He batted Aus into submission: 766 runs, avg 127, 4 hundreds.
I’m very sad to hear the news that one of the all-time great automotive journalists & broadcasters, Quentin Willson, has died, aged 68. He was clever, engaging & friendly, & we’ll not see his like again. Here he is on #TopGear in ’98. #RIPQuentinWillson
A lovely piece, from the ever excellent @EngelsbergIdeas, on how choirs can combat loneliness. engelsbergideas.com/notebook/a-com…
“Grandiose in conception, yet clear in counterpoint and orchestral texture.” – review of Mozart’s Mass First joint rehearsal this Sunday for the Mass in C minor. Ready. Set. Bring it. 🎶✨ #15NovConcert ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/edinb…
A very nice thing: I find that an article I wrote for @EngelsbergIdeas about what makes the French songbook so beguiling and so bonding is now also available as an audio piece. open.spotify.com/episode/4acCCy…
#BornOnThisDay, At 17, he was spotted by Dennis Lillee. At 32, he became Lillee — raw pace, fury & vengeance. 2013/14 wasn’t a season. It was carnage. Cook, KP, Trott, Root, Bell… World-class batters — all made to look ordinary by one man.https://t.co/97DCTRpsCg
It certainly does. The lazy, tired, ingenuous thinking of the UK’s political and media class outed by the excellent @alastair_benn. For @EngelsbergIdeas.
Britain’s elite needs a history lesson | @alastair_benn engelsbergideas.com/notebook/brita…
At a time of crisis at home and conflict abroad, it is vital that the UK's political and media class have an historically informed understanding of their country and its institutions. My latest for @EngelsbergIdeas: engelsbergideas.com/notebook/brita…
A fascinating encapsulation of Maurice Hankey, the 1st Cabinet Secretary’s pretty unique (& astonishingly varied) contribution to C20th Britain, including the first properly minuted Cabinet meetings & persuading Churchill to develop the battle tank, not to mention ‘Greek fire’:

Extraordinary!
Thinking about that moment in Roman Holiday (1953) when Gregory Peck pranked Audrey Hepburn by pretending to hurt himself. Her reaction was genuine, Wyler found it sweet, and he kept it in the film.
