Real estate is glad that @ZohranKMamdani supports rental vouchers. But would he actually make them easier to use? The city itself discriminates against voucher holders, which is illegal for landlords and brokers to do. therealdeal.com/new-york/2025/…
Politicians love to bail out Mitchell-Lamas whose shareholders don't want to pay more to maintain their buildings. But they are loath to help rent-stabilized buildings, which unlike Mitchell-Lamas have no alternative way to raise revenue. therealdeal.com/new-york/2025/…
When a fashion model walked out on her rent-stabilized lease, she left her unauthorized subletter behind. He never paid the landlord a dime, but it took two years to evict him, even though he didn’t have a lawyer. Welcome to housing court in NYC. therealdeal.com/new-york/2025/…
Three bold ideas for new housing in NYC, including on an island I didn't know existed (despite once being a reporter for the Canarsie Digest) therealdeal.com/new-york/2025/…
Recirculating this piece from 2021, because lawmakers still haven't fixed the problem of affordable housing sitting empty therealdeal.com/new-york/2021/…
I’ve had a unit failed because of a single screw missing in a 4 screw window guard missing - The super was right there , proper tools, corrected the issue in 5 minutes. Nope failed - Next available appointment for inspection was a month later the second inspection- passed…
Are Opportunity Zones helping low-income communities? More specifically, are we getting bang for the buck, or might there be a better way to target tax breaks? ncrc.org/opportunity-zo…
And when they do inspect, they might fail you for a cracked 99-cent outlet cover. Yeah, I can see why a homeless person would not want to move in with such a hazardous condition.
#AdventuresOFHousingVoucherHolders All this week, caseworkers and housing specialist have been non existent, asking for paperwork not needed, or refusing to inspect unit’s,because they didn’t want to or was too far out. So in one case another shelter was contacted that’s closer.…
Remember “Develop, Don’t Destroy Brooklyn”? Does it look like Brooklyn has been destroyed?

In our NYC 2025 Voter Guide, we say that the former governor hasn't demonstrated seriousness about addressing NYC's housing affordability crisis. Now @erik_engquist writes that Cuomo's plans are getting worse—attempting to outdo the frontrunner, he's swinging ever more wildly.

I never knew (until this week) that FHA, VA and USDA mortgages are assumable. That is, they can be transferred from sellers to buyers. Which is big, because mortgage rates have doubled since 2021. Several startups are now operating in this space. therealdeal.com/national/2025/…
Andrew Cuomo says he would start 300 projects at once to build 500,000 affordable units. And I thought @ZohranKMamdani's housing plan was absurd. therealdeal.com/new-york/2025/…
FYI we also support extending and expanding the j51 tax break for energy efficiency work. It’s a good investment for nyc. (NYC should also do more targeted subsidies to various housing types for energy efficiency, as should the state) cc: @erik_engquist therealdeal.com/new-york/2025/…

I’ve covered NY business for 20 years and never heard of the “frequency of pay” law. > Of the $450,000 settlement, $305,000 goes to lawyers and fees. The sisters' former workers who were paid biweekly stand to collect less than $200 each. cbsnews.com/newyork/news/l…
