Everyone knows you can't build a rocket without @McMasterCarr. But can you build a rocket from *only* the McMaster catalog? Challenge is live. $1100 prize purse at the moment. docs.google.com/document/d/1Hc…

It’s kind of crazy how much power SpaceX holds right now by being able to get this sort of footage out of Iran via Starlink.

Some more scenes from Tehran tonight.

It is beginning to look like SpaceX just did a software patch to "Null out" some Iranian jamming.

the best evidence that this shooting is a political bomb and that vance does not have good political instincts is that trump shut up about it ~immediately while vance is still going

This article sparked a controversy with Charles Camarda, former astronaut and thermal expert attending the meeting. He replied on Linkedin. I have copied his response here for the sake of transparency, since he didn’t seem 100% in agreemeht with the article.

I attended a half-day meeting at NASA HQ on Thursday that provided a detailed review of Orion’s heat shield status. Here is my report: arstechnica.com/space/2026/01/…

I’m happy to announce that the newest CNC machine that we built in our facility has broken our previous record of 779 pcs/minute. Our fourth and the latest machine is now manufacturing precision springs at 882 pcs/minute. If only I could tell you the amount of mechanical…

I’m sorry to spam you guys with this again but I love sharing our achievements with such a supportive community here. We just crossed another milestone with our indigenously built CNC machine. We just achieved a machine speed of 769 pcs/minute. Thank you for your attention.

So for anyone interested, I was a Heritage fellow from 2001-2011 and saw the seeds of the mess starting in 2008. It's been long enough...I feel comfy telling the story: In 2008, with the economy and markets collapsing, my colleagues in the econ dept felt necessary to endorse…

We just charge a fair price. Just enough so we can pay our guys a good wage and have some left over to buy more machines. The old way was to charge as much as the customer would bear. Not a good way to scale

As I said earlier today, chants in support of a terrorist organization have no place in our city. We will continue to ensure New Yorkers’ safety entering and exiting houses of worship as well as the constitutional right to protest.

California has explicitly pro-renewable policies. Texas has YIMBY. YIMBY is winning in deploying clean energy. We need massive STATE level permitting reform for renewables now. And open electricity markets, like ERCOT.

Let's check in on clean energy deployment in California and Texas. Texas surpassed California as the leading utility-scale solar state in 2025 with roughly 12.9 GW added last year alone. CA still has more total solar when you include distributed capacity.

This is completely not okay, and we can't become numb to repeated instances of illegal and unconstitutional action by government agencies. The recent days have been horrific.

🚨BREAKING: Border Patrol just illegally arrested a U.S. citizen… a TEENAGER… in Richfield, Minnesota. The teen was working at Target when agents tackled him and arrested him, while his passport was in his pocket, fully identifying himself as a U.S. citizen. None of it…

Law enforcement shouldn't wear masks because it is important to democracy and public trust. Protestors shouldn't wear masks because unmasked protests are more sympathetic and effective. These things are not the same.

It’s becoming clear the December Epstein file situation really scared this administration and they realized they need to speedrun the authoritarian takeover to destroy anything that could stop them

Evan Daniel reposted

This is wrong. Law enforcement should not be wearing masks, because they are granted the monopoly of force in the public trust. Private individuals are allowed to wear masks because this is a free country and you are allowed to protest, gather, and express yourself. It's simple

I would like to see both sides agree that nobody should be wearing masks in public: not protestors, and not ICE or any other LE. This masking all sides is really really bad and escalatory.

Like @davidbessis and others, I think that Hinton is wrong. To explain why, let me tell you a brief story. About a decade ago, in 2017, I developed an automated theorem-proving framework that was ultimately integrated into Mathematica (see: youtube.com/watch?v=mMaid2…) (1/15)

Automated Theorem Proving and Axiomatic Mathematics

Geoffrey Hinton says mathematics is a closed system, so AIs can play it like a game. They can pose problems to themselves, test proofs, and learn from what works, without relying on human examples. “I think AI will get much better at mathematics than people, maybe in the next…

Evan Daniel reposted

We can automate the proving of theorems, or the discovery of conjectures, or even the invention of new axiom systems, but we can't automate *mathematics*. Because "mathematics" is the name we give to the *human* cultural story, not to the formal methods themselves. (14/15)
