When we are triggered, the first thing we do is to see control. This is an attempt to stay safe from a perceived threat. It can look like being defensive, talking over someone, completely shutting down, or lashing out.
Sometimes “keeping the peace” actually means: enabling abuse.
Telling a survivor to “Leave it in the past” is dismissing the reality of their nervous system and body. No one wants to relive traumatic experiences on an ongoing basis. Survivors respond to past trauma because they are traumatized, not because they are unwilling to let go.

“Big t trauma”can have less impact in childhood if a safe adult helps a child to cope afterwards. “Little t trauma” can have a massive impact if we’re made to deal with our emotions alone. Or if we’re shamed for them. Trauma can’t be measured by the event.
