Small 0.13.1 bug fix release today: if you had problems using geopandas read_file(..) with a URL, that should normally be resolved again!
GeoPandas 0.13 is out! This new version comes with a couple of new features like a method to sample random points, sorting along a Hilbert curve or better support of GeoJSON specification. See more in the 🧵 below 👇 (or above 👆).

Okay wow, using @geopandas in Jupyter notebooks is SO COOL. You can load up a geojson and view it interactively in just two lines of code. Anyway, happy Friday y'all✌️

Following the traces of Shapely (cf. its recent 2.0 release) there is now "Spherely". It is still nowhere near Shapely's maturity and capabilities, but working on this project is exciting. More to come soon, hopefully! github.com/benbovy/sphere…

This is a important step for GeoPandas as well! If you install the latest Shapely 2.0, you will already automatically get the performance improvements while using GeoPandas (you only need to ensure you have geopandas >= 0.12)

GeoPandas 0.12.2 patch release is out. Changes the "naturalearth_lowres" data assigning Crimea to Ukraine contrary to naturalearthdata.com original data plus shapely 2.0 compatibility fixes.
