I’m happy to share that I passed my PhD viva! Huge thanks to my supervisors @MKhamisHCI & @MarkHCI for their incredible support throughout, and to my examiners @JRicoWilliamson and Marion Koelle for the thoughtful and engaging discussion @TheSIRIUSLab @glasgow_gist

New augmented-reality software developed by @ShaunMacdHCI of @GlasgowCS could teach old robots new tricks. The AZRA system aims to provide more pet-like experiences for people who are unable to keep real animals. Read more here: gla.ac.uk/news/headline_…

I'm happy to announce that I've been awarded a €1.5M European Research Council Starting Grant, coined FUTUREFAUNA. I am proud to be the first ERC grantee in animal-computer interaction, and I will soon be hiring PhD students. Please get in touch/share if you're interested.
Congrats to Dr Rachael Boyd of @UofGMaths_Stats and Dr Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas (@Ilyena) of @GlasgowCS, who have received @ERC_Research Starting Grants to support groundbreaking new research projects. Read more here: gla.ac.uk/news/headline_…

Just wrapped up a productive research visit to University of Tokyo! submitted a ~£3M #EPSRC/#JST proposal and spoke at an ASPIRE workshop on our work on human-centred privacy, security, and safety in #XR & the #Metaverse. Grateful to Yusuke Sugano for inviting me and hosting me!

I took part at the weekend with @falkirkcouncil 's Wild Science event falkirkherald.co.uk/news/people/fa… Children imagined the future of zoos learning about animals and technology. See my publication for info on the methods used dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/34… @glasgow_gist

Excited to present on "Future of interactive pet tech: giving animals choice & control" at Busan Content Market this month. Thanks to Busan Content Market, the city of Busan, and the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for the invitation ibcm.tv/sub/market/bcm…

@omarmhdn has just presented our #CHI2025 paper on Gaze Interaction on Handheld Mobile Devices. The paper reports on how the distance between the user and the device impacts the ideal target size and shape. Download the paper here: doi.org/10.1145/370659…

My #CHI presentation of my TOCHI is today! 🌸 Come find out about my on the participatory prototyping of haptic comfort objects with socially anxious users 🌸 G301 16:20 :)

@glasgow_gist has contributed significantly to #CHI2025 with 13 papers (3 with awards), 2 journal papers, and several late breaking works. Our own Sharon Ding co-led the technical program, managing 5k paper submissions (more in other tracks) & coordinating a whopping 18k reviews!

New research at @acm_chi: How can interactive technology benefit both zoo animals and visitors? We developed a device allowing red-ruffed lemurs to trigger smell, sound & visual stimuli. Result: 4021 interactions over 63 days, with lemurs preferring multimodal to unimodal stimuli
New technology developed by @Ilyena of @GlasgowCS in partnership with @BlairDrummondSP which allows zoo animals and their human visitors to share experiences could have positive benefits for both. Read more here: gla.ac.uk/news/headline_…

I am excited to be an invited speaker at the @bcs_lovelace colloquium today about my research in Animal-Computer Interaction. I'll share how animals, from zoo-housed lemurs to pet dogs, use technology to control their environments and even video call each other
Our paper "Animals' Entanglement with Technology: A Scoping Review" has been accepted to CHI 2025. Our comprehensive literature review analyses 795 works on animal-tech interaction across diverse contexts. Explore our dataset at findapaper.interactanimallab.com 📰

Insights from a new study focused on widening the use of eye-tracking as a control method for mobile devices could offer a sharper view of the smartphones of the future. Read more about the research, led by @omarmhdn and @MKhamisHCI of @GlasgowCS, here: gla.ac.uk/news/headline_…
