I went on @DevAndResearch with @_rossry to talk about investing in vaccines and drugs for neglected public health challenges, and what we’re working on at GHIC.
This week on @DevAndResearch, I sat down with @incredutility to talk about: • are there profitable investments in global public health? (and are there hundreds of millions of dollars of them?) • what makes investing in public health is harder (and easier) than conventional…
This is a world we’re hurtling back towards because of rising antibiotic resistance and broken antibiotic markets (which has led to a complete halt to funding and innovation). Perhaps “AI solves this”, but I fear we are in for a difficult ~decade if we don’t act soon.
In 1924, Calvin Coolidge's 16-year-old son played tennis on the White House grounds without wearing socks. He got a blister, and a week later was dead from infection. This is nearly unthinkable today — a result of astounding progress humankind has made over the past century.
It's genuinely incredible how sticky the water/data center lie is. This is a relatively major publication just outright lying. The story itself *does not match the headline*. And yet they go with the lie anyways.
How Oregon’s Data Center Boom Is Supercharging a Water Crisis Amazon has come to the state’s eastern farmland, worsening a water pollution problem that’s been linked to cancer and miscarriages. Rolling Stone reports in collaboration with @fernnews: rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…
Very informative thread for outsiders / busy people following the CHAI / Nabla 'one shot drug-like antibody' announcements! TLDR: Nabla appears to have meaningfully better monovalent binding relative to CHAI.
x.com/owl_posting/st… Good catch from @Owl_Posting missed in the initial Chai/JAM comparisons — looks like JAM-2’s affinities are consistently 1-2 OOM better than Chai-2s, which is a big gap and key to whether de novo antibodies are good enough to go directly into animals 🧵…
Absolutely horrible day for patients/families with Alzheimer’s…. 1st, GLP-1, now anti-Tau Mab. 2 of more promising approaches. Shows, again, how challenging it is to advance new Rx & why there must be a strong reward for the innovators and investors that deploy risk capital!
Johnson & Johnson’s attempt to develop a $5 billion-a-year Alzheimer’s disease drug has been rocked by a phase 2 flop. $JNJ fiercebiotech.com/biotech/jjs-5b…
We’re ngmi if a somewhat deadlier new virus comes along, “spend money on vaccines” is barely above water as a countermeasure! open.substack.com/pub/theargumen…
This is very exciting - my wife works at a healthcare startup in the Medicaid population, and it's been truly illuminating how challenging this problem is. I say this as someone who spent the first part of my career in global health and development. Kudos to @SebastianCaliri…
With apologies to the skeptics, announcing an oversubscribed $22.5M series A in Nest Health, primary care for low income Medicaid families. So many people said it couldn’t be done, while pontificating on their mission focus and the grave threat of Medicaid cuts. We said…
One area in Silicon Valley just absolutely crushes the government is at the speed of blameless postmortems after an outage like this and the degree to which they help everyone get better.
How Cloudflare's recent outage postmortem got written up and published so quickly.
Real AI policy is just the debt covenants written by K&E for the Apollo infrastructure team
Debt for Datacenters and AI Safety I think AI labs taking on lots of debt for capex is probably underrated as a future drain on their epistemic security around safety and alignment decisions. Taking on lots of debt seems like tying oneself to the mast of needing extremely rapid…
0'ing discovery costs w epitope specific drug candidates enables exploration & exploitation of the FULL {pathway x target x epitope} space for any given function. we will see MUCH better molecules enter the clinic, rather than "oh here's a directed evolution born TSLP binder…
Hard to understate the progress and utility jump from binders to full-length in silico designed antibodies
drug discovery -> drug design the @chaidiscovery team is on the critical path to in silico direct to DC across an expanding palette of modalities
Another one.
Today, we’re releasing new data showing that Chai-2 can design antibodies against challenging targets with atomic precision. >86% of our designs possess industry-standard drug-quality properties without any optimization. Thread👇
Incredibly cool - worth clicking through the case studies and papers linked below. It's been a long time coming, but I think we're about to hit an inflection point in scientific productivity.
AI’s ability to accelerate scientific progress is one of the most powerful ways it can improve the world, enabling discoveries that can have a dramatic, positive impact on people’s lives at both a personal and societal level. But scientific progress can be slow. Our new GPT-5…
In peacetime, scientists belong to the whole world; in wartime, scientists belong to their homeland.
It’s going to be interesting to see just how much ~zeroing out drug discovery costs and timelines impacts development timelines. My prediction is that this has a sub 20% impact on timelines and costs, in part because we’re about to flood the zone with these types of candidates…
Chai Discovery is out with what looks like very similar results to Nabla Bio's JAM-2 that I reported out yesterday Protein design space making traction on de novo drug-like antibodies, beyond just getting hits/binders on targets Chai's blog: chaidiscovery.com/news/chai-2-mab

No culture is safe from nerds in Japan. Any song your people have or dish they make. Japanese autism will seize it and do it ten times better than your ancestors could’ve ever imagined.
