Well, wage aside (!), don't hang up the lab coat -- the multivariate approaches are achievable (with cluster access, of course) -- @novelli_leo's recent papers demonstrate how we can scale up to realistic neural data set sizes today (using our open source IDTxl @infotoolkit)
